In Lewis county six residents from the Merle Smith farm died when a Chesapeake and Ohio westbound passenger train struck their auto at a grade crossing near Vanceburg. The driver Cecil Sartin, five others died at once and a sixth, Nancy Jane Stennett, died later at a hospital. Coroner to hold inquest Monday.

J L Richards a 59 year old undertaker and owner of Richards funeral home since 1918 died suddenly at his Gallia and Waller streets home. He fell ill after supper Saturday, a doctor was summoned, and complications led to death. Born Jackson April 24 1882 he trained at Bernhard School of Embalming Newark NJ and passed Ohio board in 1909. He worked with Fletcher Brown in Columbus and moved to Portsmouth in 1918 to start his business.
