AP photographer Dan Van Phuoc accompanied U S Marines during Operation Meade River south of Da Nang. Trapped bunkers held a 16 year old Viet Cong girl and two North Vietnamese soldiers who surrendered after warnings. A lieutenant described tired troops and ongoing combat.
Maryland Governor Spiro T. Agnew told reporters in Palm Springs that his vice presidency would remain controversial, and he predicted the Nixon administration would usher in an era of renaissance for state governments by granting them flexibility.
Vice President Agnew, speaking for Nixon, criticizes uneven federal grant allocation and calls for block grants to give states more spending leeway. He advocates consolidating about 400 grants-in-aid programs and replacing narrow controls with broader authority. He plans midday talks with GOP governors at a state dinner.
The ordinance authorizes buying Glockner Chevrolet Co property at Second and Chillicothe Streets for 215000 as the final parcel in the Ohio University Portsmouth urban renewal project. The deal, approved 6-1, followed a negotiated compromise led by City Manager Huxley Kennedy with Glockner’s owners. The land will be acquired by closing Friday at 1:30 p.m. and the site will be razed for OU Portsmouth expansion after Glockner moves to Route 23.

The Pentagon said it will release about 20,000 mobilized Army National Guardsmen and Reservists about five months early and boost draft calls to fill gaps. The January draft quota remains 26,800 with a likely monthly rise near 3,000. 38,000 reservists and guardsmen were called after the winter crisis.
A winter cold snap froze the Midwest as Conneaut residents queued for soup and slept in a church after a heavy snowstorm knocked out power in half the city. Winds hit 50 mph, power was expected to be restored today, and Red Cross staff anticipated hundreds visiting the emergency center. Temperatures plunged near zero from Montana to Minnesota with frost reaching the deep South. six deaths were attributed to the cold.
Kenneth Maze a 58 year old Greyhound driver from Portsmouth suffered a fatal heart attack while driving a Portsmouth bound bus four miles east of Aberdeen Ohio. He managed to pull the bus to the berm and stop it before collapsing saving about 20 passengers who escaped injury. Maze died at 5 30 a m in Hayswood Hospital Maysville. A relief bus was sent from Portsmouth.
Deer hunter Dan E. Mace, 38, of Dundas died when his car was hit by a Baltimore & Ohio freight train at an unguarded crossing of Routes 93 and 349 in Wellston. Two Ousley brothers James 45 Mansfield and Burton 42 Belleville were injured and treated at Oak Hill Hospital. Mace’s body lies at Wrightsel Funeral Home in McArthur.
Ralston Purina announced the Wellston Ohio plant will stop turkey processing December 20 and convert to convenience food production. The move aims to boost Southern Ohio farmers and local employment with an investment around seven million dollars.
On Thanksgiving Eve Route 52 near Point Pleasant a soft drink bottle shattered the Greyhound windshield injuring driver O B Lykins of Dogwood Ridge. Passengers credit Lykins with calm control stopping the bus, signaling for help as Lloyd W Peters and others assisted until authorities arrived.
