Jaycettes will staff the Christmas House at Kresge's, Rotary at Portsmouth Banking front, Kiwanis at Security Central National Bank, and a Salvation Army group at National Bank of Portsmouth. Fraternal Order of Police, Firefighters, and sheriff's department will handle mid day kettles Friday. Funds go to the KETTLE DAY drive. coordinators include Dean Byers of the Jaycees.
City under emergency legislation moves to mobilize government for emergencies. Layton outlines plans to restore telephones from Ohio Consolidated and calls for state aid if needed. Training for police to handle crowds begins Monday with State Highway Patrol instructors at City Hall.
Sheriff’s office investigates a holdup at a West Portsmouth service station on Elm Street. Operator H Charles Albrecht says a robber forced him to open the door around 5 40 am and shoved a object into his back before grabbing a money roll from his left pocket and fleeing uphill toward Grandview Avenue. Local officers were notified after Albrecht sent his first customer.
Scioto County Auditor Carl R. Smith announced distributions totaling 1,286,267 to county subdivisions from last half 1955 real estate, inheritance and house trailer taxes. Portsmouth School District received 390,165. Portsmouth general fund 269,697. county general fund 190,315. New Boston general fund 43,105. overall first-half total 2,035,187, up from 3,044,857 last year due to higher tax rates and a school building bond issue retirement.
The Air Force announced a reorganization moving five reserve wings from tactical duties to troop carrier assignments. The change, effective by October 1 next year, aims to boost airlift capability in line with continuing requirements.
At least two killed and 37 injured in a massive explosion at the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corp plant in East Alton Illinois. A third man is missing and presumed dead as fires injure several nearby buildings. Identified victims include William Schoenbaum Floyd Wisnasky and Gerald Dillard. A separate blast at Niagara Falls New York injures four. The Illinois blast destroyed a nitroglycerine solvent shed and damaged surrounding structures.

Piqua Ohio plans to switch to nuclear electricity as a 12500 kilowatt reactor would replace the coal powered city plant. The city negotiates with the Atomic Energy Commission to fund most costs and with Atomics International to build the reactor by 1960. If agreed, the program aims to show commercial atomic power and the AEC would run small reactors for five years in participating cities.
The Collier Trophy goes to Boeing Airplane Co. president William M. Allen and associates, jointly with the U S Air Force and its Chief of Staff General Nathan F. Twining, for sponsoring and developing the 352 bomber. The National Aeronautic Association announced the award on Wednesday.

Augusta Ga report notes President Eisenhower announced plans to air and sea lift 21 500 Hungarian refugees to the United States with 15 000 by Air Force and Navy transport and 6 500 by an inter governmental committee. Hagerty said the operation could be the largest peace time airlift. About 16 000 to travel by planes and 5 000 by ship starting within days at 200 daily.
