A feature on Portsmouth women, highlighting widowed Capt. Edward N. Hope's widow and German matrons. Profiles include Mrs. Hope, lifelong Portsmouth resident and artist with two sons, and Margaret Kugelman Yaeger, Bavarian immigrant and longtime dry goods businesswoman.
At the Teacher's Institute last August Dr Vickers superintendent of public schools proposed a Columbus Society to study the life of Christopher Columbus for the 1892 Chicago anniversary. The society held its first meeting at the High school with a short program and readings. The constitution provides a general council and subordinate councils among pupils. Officers include Dr Vickers president John A Long vice president and several secretaries and a treasurer. Membership fees: adults one dollar, children ten cents.
Harley Cline, once a Mercers drugstore clerk from Middleport, died at home last Wednesday evening at eight o clock of typhoid fever. A bright youth, he studied at the Columbus College of Pharmacy after returning from college. He was the son of F M Cline Esq, the Meigs County recorder, and his mother is deceased.
The west side of the water works building shows heavy damage with a jagged crack spanning a window line, resembling a painful dental nerve. Officials fear further deterioration as quicksand under the foundation, drawn out by a new well, threatens the structure while the tunnel remains finished.
The board of health met last Monday evening and decided to take the hog case to the Supreme Court for final adjustment. Scarlet fever cases for the past month include Abigail Ventran, 183 East Eleventh Street. William Bierley, 14 West Seventh Street. Henry Amberg, East Ninth Street. Frank Thompson, 107 Boundary. T. M. Patterson, 230 East Ninth Street. Wm. E. Ross, East Twelfth Street. No deaths from scarlet fever were reported. One diphtheria case was recorded, Mrs Chas Kendall.
Charles Timberlake a respected citizen of Shultz Kentucky died Wednesday evening of consumption. He was about forty three, left a wife and five children. After two years invalidism he suffered much. Burial was held Thursday evening at the family burying ground near Bennett's Chapel.
A select gathering at St Charles dining rooms hosted by Auditor Musser for county and city boards of equalization, with quail and oysters, champagne and beer, four hours of speeches and singing about taxation, followed by news of a local death and a vote on women lay delegates at Sixth Street M E Church.
Squire Hazelbaker presented a petition for the incorporation of Otway to the city commissioners. The matter will lay over until January 15 for final action. A petition to divide Brush Creek township into Rarden and Otway precincts was also presented amid tensions over saloon locations and local politics.
A second ten cent concert by All Saints church ladies in the chapel featured Mrs Nannie Kinney in charge with a varied program of piano and vocal solos, instrumental pieces, a quartet, and a reading, drawing praise from attendees and several encores. Ice cream and cake were served at the usual price.
The decennial city and county board of equalization faced heavy public pressure as valuation disparities sparked widespread complaints. Citizens, from wealthy to poor, protested rises, with cases of overvaluation and alleged favoritism prompting an open session and a later star chamber review to decide adjustments.
Andrew J. Kirkendall files in common pleas court for divorce from Louisa Kirkendall alleging adultery. The couple reside on Pond Run and neighbors Fred Henson and Frank Cooper of that area are named in the petition as partners in the wife s guilt.
John C. Reis and William Willis form a partnership and open a barber shop at 220 Marketstreet. Both are seasoned barbers offering top style at popular prices. Success to the new firm.
F M Griffin, long time traveling agent for the Times, has severed his connection with the paper and opened a confectionary and cigar stand on Market Street in the Micklethwait building. The newspaper wishes him success and notes his industrious merit.
Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses Michael of Valley Kentucky, after three weeks visiting the area around Tygart Kentucky, returned home on Monday. They paused in town for hospitality with Mr. and Mrs. F M Chiffin at 446 Gallia Street.
Sanford Warner and Co issue notable notices on the Times fifth page as they cut prices in various lines. Peter Mougey of Madison township visited Wednesday morning, bringing cheer. Mongey is a longtime friend of the Times, which is widely regarded as leading the field.
The Commercial Tourists Peast hosts a formal opening banquet at the Hotel Portsmouth tonight. Nearly all of River City Council, about one hundred members, will attend with many Farrin brethren, local press, and ladies invited. The event begins at eight with an Italian orchestra and a program of toasts led by Toastmaster U. T. Cs. The River City Council, the Ladies, and several named speakers are listed among the participants.
The sale and transfer of the Askland Coal Company's city property was completed to Mr. Brooks by Mr. F Coles. Brooks has assumed active management while retaining the old clerks. The couple, after months in Colorado and the West, will soon establish housekeeping in their East Second street property.
The city Sons of Veterans Veanna Camp No 35 hosts a four day fair starting December 16 to raise funds to arm and equip their military company. Contests include a sword presentation between James Larrimer and George C Clayton and a watch contest between Marie McElhaney and Kate Phillippi.

A splomlid audience attended One of the Finest but critics found the show lacking. Excessive use of a tank drew skepticism during Thanksgiving night performances. Audiences prefer a solid act over spectacle with living water in tanks.
Jim and Ed Walsh of Otway return from a two week expedition in the Cumberland mountains famed for bears and wild animals. Ed teases stories but lets Jim tell them later, promising an eager audience and anxious anticipation for the tale.
The Henry M. Stanley, Bay Brothers new Kanawha trade boat, docked at our landing Thursday. It is described as the largest finest and fastest boat the Bay Brothers own, noted for speed and beauty.
Mr. Jackson and wife formerly of Indiana return to Portsmouth to reside. Also back are Mr. W. Flanders and his son John. Mr. Jackson is an attorney. Friends warmly welcome them home.
