The New York Herald condemns Returning Boards as a path to a disputed presidential victory. It argues Republicans must ensure Tilden is seated to avoid fraud taint, warning that failing to satisfy the public will invite North counteraction and political ruin.
Sealed packages of Desoto Parish votes were opened by the Board revealing a consolidated statement and protests. A secretary faced questions over dated protests and two separate packages, raising fraud suspicions amid partisan tension. In a Tribune interview Governor Hendricks says Western sentiment on the election is strong and leads him to come East to gauge public feeling.
