City records show a strong move to repeal the 18th Amendment with a 3334 to 360 vote, about half the usual turnout. Ward breakdowns show clear majorities in favor, led by Ward 5, while overall turnout remained light and without active registration drives.
New Hampshire backed repeal of the 18th amendment by nearly three to one in a special election yesterday with 106,306 total votes. Counties split strongly Wet, with Hillsborough and Rockingham exceeding 2 to 1 in favor of repeal while Cheshire and Grafton showed mixed results. Towns like Manchester, Lebanon, and Hanover reported large repeal margins, and turnout totaled about 1,600 voters, higher than the prior year’s primary.
A Navy Yard order, posted by Rear Admiral Mall, directs construction of six submarines under the National Industrial Recovery Act approved June 16, 1933. President Roosevelt and entourage sailed from Gloucester on the Amberjack around 12:20 PM and are expected to reach Little Harbor by 6 PM. He plans to stay overnight, reuniting with Gloucester’s fishing captains after a swift late-night voyage along the Massachusetts Bay.
Mount Washington, June 21. A heavy wet fog shrouded the White Mountains as a searching party pressed on for Simon Josephs, 20, a Harvard sophomore who disappeared Sunday during a gale while climbing Crawford Trail toward Lake of the Clouds with companions William Robbins, 19, also a Harvard student, and Gerald Golden, Massachusetts Institute of Technology student. The trio left Fryeburg, Maine, to climb toward the Lake. Dozens of hazardous precipices lie nearby as the party extends its search below the summit area.
The market cooled after a tentative uptick as the British pound fell about two cents and foreign exchange reacted modestly. Lead boosts came from United States Industrial Alcohol, American Commercial Alcohol, Owens-Illinois, Case, Celanese and Western Union, all rising about two points. Major names including Dupont, United States Steel, Chrysler, International Harvester, Standard of New Jersey, Socony Vacuum, Johns Manville and Continental Goco improved.
The National Railway Mail Clerks Association elected officers. President W. M. Gollings of Washington DC and secretary Rufus E. Ross of Portsmouth were chosen, with J. F. Bennett of Alleghany NY as vice president and H. W. Strickland of Washington DC as industrial secretary. The tabulation occurred last night.
Sir Ronald Lindsay, the British ambassador, is scheduled to fly to Boston today. He will not meet President Roosevelt and will stay with friends, visiting Boston on purely personal affairs and not for official business.
A smoking motor connected to a compressor at the fire and repair shop of W. 8B Dryden 97 Fleet Street caused a still alarm at 11 30 last night. Firemen forced an entrance and found no real fire and no damage beyond the motor.
