James M. Culberson 37 native of Oklahoma and Southwestern College Memphis graduate will take the post of Portsmouth public schools physical director Sept 1 announced by Superintendent Harry L. Moore. Culberson chosen by the vacancy committee after Ralph Brackett’s death and confirmed by the Tail board. He will head football at Portsmouth High School next fall and oversee basketball baseball and track with likely faculty coaches named. Culberson earned a 1919 Oklahoma Intercollegiate Track mile title and played football and basketball at Southwestern College later serving as assistant coach and freshman-sophomore PE instructor. He held Alpha Tau Omega leadership and delegations to YMCA and national conventions. Continued on page three.
The 20th Annual American Legion State Convention arrives with thousands of Legionnaires from New England. Delegates register at M C A building, receive rooms and programs, then attend stag events at WALW home and Pleasant street, followed by the 8 p.m parade and Legion banquet with Ruby Newman band. Sunday features a massive parade, drum corps contests, and fireworks, with the event touted as the largest in New Hampshire history.
Maine State Police Lieutenant Leon P. Shepard opened an investigation at the request of Attorney General Frank A. Burkett into F. E. Bradbury 78 charged with disposing of his sister Harriet Bradbury 76 body without a permit. Officers searched the Bradbury home and furnace where the body was burned to save funeral costs, collected bones and a chair for analysis, and Bradbury awaiting grand jury action after pleading guilty in municipal court.
John Roosevelt and Anne Lindsay Clark are expected to arrive at Little Boar's Head after their Nahant wedding. Friends say the debut of Miss Hope Halsey will attract over 1500 guests with Ruby Newman and his orchestra providing music. The event will feature a large platform near Gov Puljer’s former summer home and a canopy for the occasion.
Reaction to the Salvation Army campaign in the city is tepid but officials hope for a late surge. They acknowledge many have heavy demands but stress the worth of the work and ask contributors to give promptly, large or small, to support the corps in the city and vicinity.
Two South Eliot youths, Herbert Clark and Chester Staples, were critically injured when their car struck a sand pile, veered into a ditch, and collided with a boulder. Clark was to Wentworth Hospital on the danger list. Staples possibly fractured skull. Clark had been treated recently in Portsmouth for injuries from another accident.
Shanghai dispatches report Chinese and Japanese forces fleeing as the Yellow River flood breaches dykes from Chengchow to Kaifeng. The inundation swamps Henan plains, displacing around 300,000 civilians and drowning an estimated 150,000.
Washington June 15 AP An unexpected oratory in the Senate halted expected adjournment as leaders hoped to finish remaining measures. The Wage Hour bill cleared, a relief and public works bill advanced, and a flood control proposal sparked debate over government land condemnation and cross state benefits. Vermont senators Austin and Gibson pledged long talking to recommit and seek state consent before seizing land, while Norris defended federal damownership as essential.
Sheriff Simes Frink backs an early capture of Fred MacDonald, a prisoner who escaped from Portsmouth hospital after slashing himself and fleeing in a night shirt. A hundred Boy Scouts helped search Portsmouth New Castle and Rye, while residents were urged to report sightings of the 39 year old Brooklyn native tall, tattooed man with a self inflicted head wound and blue eyes.
Shirley E. Miles, 23, of Rye, narrowly escaped drowning when he fell from his 26 foot motor craft Spare Time beside the Isles of Shoals steamer. Three men pulled him from Piscataqua River onto the deck, first aid given, then Inspector Kelley and Patrolman Scarponi took him to Portsmouth Hospital in stable condition. Captain Shirley Holt Jr. witnessed the fall and leaped to help, with Warren White and another longshoreman aiding in the rescue.
Police probe a break at Frank D. Butler’s Insurance and Real Estate office at 5 Market Square during lunch hour yesterday. The door was jimmied and $16 was stolen while the office was closed.
New Gloucester Maine June 15 Frank Kiley of Haverhill Massachusetts was killed when the automobile he drove skidded left the road between White's Corner and Upper Gloucester and turned over several times Eddie Conway also of Haverhill with Kiley suffered serious injuries and Mrs Blanche Kiley was uninjured at Central Maine General Hospital Lewiston
Fire at the 40 year old H. J. Page starch factory and adjacent dryhouse in Fort Kent, Maine, caused about 12000 in losses. The blaze started about 5 30 a m and swept through the two story building in an hour. little starch and potatoes were saved. The plant, due to close, will be rebuilt and Page reported some insurance.
