Mattern Aims For Pacific Flight Record Bid

A. P. reports Jimmy Mattern prepares for a solo Pacific crossing after a series of staged hops from Seville to the United States. Italian Air Minister Balbo oversees rapid mass flights toward Chicago as Capt. Mariano Barr and Lieut. Joaquin Collar join preparatory hops. The NYC to Port au Prince nonstop leg is set to depart late today aboard the Columbia piloted by Capt. J. Erroll Boyd and two companions.

Terrific explosion roils New Jersey coast, deaths feared

Nine known dead and about 75 injured after a powerful blast struck a ceruloid plant in North Arlington New Jersey. Fire destroyed seven houses and sent fire and debris into a bathing beach crowd beside the Passaic river. Witnesses report a roaring blast with flames reaching twenty feet and a second explosion that spread flames to garages and cars as firefighters began dawn searches for more victims.

Chinaman to die for murder of laundryman

Chin Kee of Boston, 33, convicted of first degree murder in Melrose for the August slaying of Sam Lee, a local laundryman. Judge Thomas J. Hammond sentences Kee to the electric chair at Charlestown prison in the week beginning August 6. Kee, through an interpreter, proclaimed innocence and named Leong Gai and Soo Hoo Kai as the actual killers, saying he feared they would kill his uncle and himself.

Fought Ship Fire After sixty hours on Arizon

The American freighter Arizon reached Boston with 60 crew members exhausted after battling a fire in hold No. 4 for almost sixty hours. Escorted by Coast Guard Cutter Mojave the ship came to port where a Boston fire boat took over the fight as the blaze remained confined to the hold. Engineers feared the fire could reach the engine room if unchecked.

Death toll from heat wave rises across regions

The heat wave killed over 1250 people as it rolled from the Middle West to the Atlantic Seaboard. Thundery relief was forecast with showers and breezes, but fatalities persisted in New York, Pennsylvania, and surrounding areas, with hundreds more affected and horses collapsing in the streets.

Miss Elizabeth Alkire daughter of Lt Comdr and Mrs H H Alkire of 148 Richards avenue will receive her master’s degree from Mount Holyoke College Monday. She studied political science with Prof Ellen Deborah Ellis after graduating last June and chaired the judicial board during her senior year enforcing community rules.

Senate Passes Big Industrial Bill in 57 to 24 Vote

Washington June 10 The Democratic majority pushed through the administration’s recovery measure in the Senate after a long day. The final 57 to 24 vote sent the bill back to the House for agreement to amendments, marking the last major piece of the President’s special session program. Officials say passage will fund $3.3 billion in public works and advance the construction of two submarines at Portsmouth navy yard.
