Bank Trial Testimony To Begin In Texas Case
Federal court in Houston recently opened testimony in the case of Robert A. Mann of Waco and Bank of the Southwest, charged with missapplication of funds. The 1973 indictment accuses Mann of using a 6.9 million loan at 3 percent to gain control of First National Bank of Waco, with 4 million deposited in a non interest account at Bank of the Southwest to save about 560 thousand in interest over two years. Special prosecutor Henry J. Novak said Mann knew the loan was effectively free. Defense argued low rates were a common practice in bank stock acquisitions in Texas.
