Benefit Set To Help Buy Shot in Eye
A benefit supper for 11 year old Jimmy Richter of Magnolia Beach is planned for Saturday at 7 p.m. at Taylors Bar and Grocery on Indianola Beach. Tickets are $1.50 a plate. Jimmy has lost sight in one eye after a pellet gun accident while playing near the Indianola Beach monument. He underwent surgery at Hermann Hospital in Houston and is listed as recovering. Donations to the Jimmy Richter Fund can be sent to Taylors Store, Port Lavaca.

Calhoun County hosts its second annual Vegetable Show at Viking Mall with entries accepted 8:30 to 10:30 am Saturday. Exhibits must be home garden grown by the exhibitor and are split into junior and senior divisions across multiple vegetable classes. Rosettes, ribbons, and champion rosette awarded. entries picked up 3:30 to 4 pm with leftovers donated to Gulf Coast Nursing Home. Gilbert Heideman notes sprays may be used to improve appearance. The show aims to stimulate gardening in the county and drew 238 exhibitors at the first show.

Stolen pickup recovered by local police
A Victoria company pickup stolen earlier was found on the Highway 35 causeway near Point Comfort after being driven by a juvenile runaway from a Victoria school. The vehicle, spotted by Reserve Officer Wayne Dunlap on the Chocolate Bayou Bridge, was traced to Seacrest Hall Roofing Company. Police report the juvenile, from Jackson County, was picked up by juvenile authorities Thursday evening. Items worth 175 dollars were stolen from a second pickup parked at Hogg's Bayou, including a 20 gauge shotgun, a green tool box with sockets and rackets, and a mudgrip tire.

Commission Opens Bids For Scales At Point Comfort
Calhoun Navigation District commissioners opened five bids for heavy duty public motor truck scales at the Point Comfort public dock Friday. Bids ranged from 22,573 by Industrial Scale and Equipment of Houston to 41,691 by Parker Construction of Port Lavaca. The June 11 meeting at 9 30 a.m. at the Point Comfort warehouse will award the contract.
