David Hoffman, son of Mr and Mrs Bobbie Hoff man, Point Comfort, found a siamese toad with fused front feet and underdeveloped back legs behind his home. The pair could not be separated without harm. Hoff man planned to have experts examine the unusual amphibian.
The Texas Supreme Court ordered the removal of O. P. Carrillo of Benavides from the 229th Judicial District. It marked the first time the court removed a judge on the Judicial Qualifications Commission's advice, with Carrillo appealing the Senate removal.
Calioun County Commissioners Court will meet at 10 a.m. Friday in the county courthouse to discuss a new field agreement with the U S Fish and Wildlife Service for a trapper and other agenda items including polling place designations, pipeline relocation on the sanitary landfill tract, private attorney session, issuing service certificates to retiring hospital board members, and bid advertising for seaboating and new construction on county roads opening Aug 9.

In New York the Democratic National Convention nears its climax as Jimmy Carter eyes tonight’s roll call and a 1,505 vote threshold to clinch the nomination. He plans to announce his running mate choice at a Thursday news conference after consulting senators Muskie Mondale Glenn Jackson Church Stevenson. Carter also meets labor and governors leaders seeking to assist his bid.
Aluminum Co of America asks Texas Parks and Wildlife for authorization to dredge nearly two million cubic yards of mercury contaminated silt from its Point Comfort channel. A TPWD examiner voices concern over sparse grab samples. Dredge spoil would be disposed in a lagoon two miles east, with water return piped back to the channel. Authorities note mercury levels are among the highest on the Texas coast. Several agencies objected to initial disposal plans and required a high ground site.
City officials and Councilmet in a four and a half hour workshop to review the proposed budget for the coming year. They anticipate possible increases in sewer and water rates but did not specify amounts.
Insurance firms ask the Texas State Insurance Board for an average 27.9 percent increase in private passenger auto rates citing inflation. Proposed hikes include bodily injury 18.7 percent, property damage 40.9 percent, full comprehensive 15.5 percent, and collision with $100 deductible 36.2 percent. One decrease of 4.2 percent for uninsured motorist coverage was noted. Premiums vary by driver and location.
CORPUS CHRISTI Texas AP Certification of grain loss delays government aid to Coastal Bend producers who lost about 100 million dollars last week due to rain. The USDA disaster fund would cover up to 60 percent once loss is certified by the local ASCS office. The Corpus Christi grain exchange says tested grain is fit only for animal feed.
