Doctors Create Esophagus From Colon For Girl Patient
In El Paso a three year old girl from Lordsburg New Mexico named Michelle McCarthy underwent a two stage operation to replace part of her esophagus with a colon graft. Doctors said the transplant will grow with her though meals must be eaten in a sitting or standing position and she cannot eat normally in space. The procedure, performed after early birth diagnosis, involved moving an eight inch portion of colon to the stomach then connecting it to the throat five weeks later. This aims to aid children with esophageal deficiencies, though normal swallowing cannot be fully restored.
