Agriculture Secretary Queried About Cattlemen's Profit Loss
PARK RIDGE Illinois AP Agriculture Secretary Earl L Butz should explain why beef producers miss profits from retail meat sales Allan P Grant president of the American Farm Bureau Federation says feed cattle prices have been low for 22 years with feeders losing up to 100 or more per head Grant asks for an investigation to see why cattle raisers receive less at the market than the cost of production He cites June 1976 USDA data showing 46 44 per 100 weight needed to cover costs for a 600 pound feeder steer finished at 1050 pounds while 1050-1225 pound steers sold for 36 37 50 per 100 weight in August 1976 He notes higher losses in the Great Plains and says cattle feeders may lose money through 1976 unless demand improves and wholesale beef prices rise He asks whether retailers reflect lower live animal prices in meat prices and calls for a GAO or Justice Department probe and asks for action to curb labor rules by some unions restricting supermarket meat sales after 6 pm
