Warning Pays Off at La Soufriere Eruption Threat
Scientists warned that La Soufriere could erupt with force similar to Mt. Pelee, prompting evacuations of about 72,000 people in Guadeloupe. Charles Brousse of the University of Paris said the eruption was an inexorable process, but the large evacuation aimed to avert loss of life as gas and ash accompanied rising activity. Three ships moved 6,000 evacuees from Basse-Terre to Pointe-A-Pitre while roads and a major highway jammed with fleeing families and possessions.
