Drag Races Set Sunday on Gunnery Range

Drag races will be held Sunday March 20 on the Laguna Madre airstrip five miles west of Port Isabel. Registration starts 8 a.m. with preliminaries at 9 a.m. finals at 1 p.m. Sponsored by the Rio Grande Valley Timing Association. Trophies to class winners. Entry 50 cents and admission 75 cents.

Port Isabel Boy Buried After Accidental Shooting

Arturo Bennett a 14 year old Port Isabel resident died from an accidental gunshot wound. Funeral services were held Sunday evening at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church Port Isabel with burial in Port Isabel Cemetery conducted by Kreidler Ashcraft of San Benito. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Felix Bennett.

Brownsville Deputy D A Resigns for Tax Work

Harry D. Lewis resigns as assistant district attorney in Brownsville to collect delinquent taxes for the city. He will be replaced April 1 by Fount Ray, Brownsville attorney, announced this week by District Attorney F. T. Graham.

Port Isabel native Ben Champion dies in Houston

Ben Champion born 1903 in Port Isabel, a third generation resident, died Sunday in Houston and was buried Tuesday in Brownsville. He helped run the Champion grocery with family, later moving to Brownsville and then to Feito toriee Tee pion Fish company. Rosary services were held in Brownsville, with funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife Margaret and three brothers.

Park director Al McGehee reports over 23 000 visitors to South Padre Island since March 1 as the Queen Isabella causeway sees rising traffic. First two weeks crossings total 5692 up from 2974 last year while daily midnight totals reach 126 896. Missing Girl Found In Oklahoma City Drama

Billie JoAnn Williams sixteen left near the shrimp drying plant on Highway 100 between Los Fresnos and Port Isabel. Reports from Oklahoma City claimed a marriage to a man named Ted Gordon, but sheriff’s officials concluded she fabricated the story to avoid worry, and she has gone to a doctor for anti rabies treatment after contact with a rabies risk from a dog bite.

Fate Of Missing Crew A Mystery

The shrimp boat Little Lorraine was found wrecked 20 miles south of Carmen with Captain Torres J. Dantin and two crewmen missing. Charles J. Riley of Western Shellfish Co. identified the vessel and offers no explanation for the disappearance. Riley plans further travel to Carmen and nearby Bay of Campeche locations to seek answers.

Box Rent Due At Local Post Office

Port Isabel reports box rent for the final quarter of the fiscal year is due. Payment can cover March 31 to June 30, with the new fiscal year starting July 1. The change follows a 1954 postal law amendment and many patrons utilized the rule last year.

Police hold two men as suspects in a weekend burglary at the Jarocha bar on Leal street. Reports say the thieves took 16 bottles of beer and $10 in dimes, and damaged the cigarette machine though the coin box yielded no payout.

Military Highway Bids Opening Planned in Austin

Bids for rebuilding widening and straightening the Military Highway section between La Paloma and Brownsville are to be opened in Austin on March 22. The State Highway Commission expects to award the contract that day or the next. Ballenger Construction is completing a similar project on the Military Highway from Hidalgo County line west of Santa Maria to La Paloma. Landowners opposed the earlier straightening but the dispute was settled and plans include a new entrance into Brownsville.

George Nelson Funeral Held Mon

George Nelson cafe owner and Port Isabel resident dies suddenly at his cafe last Saturday. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at Kriedler Ashcraft chapel San Benito with Rev. Wednesday reports list Jess Willard of San Benito with 23 trout and Tom Rayfield of Hamden Ala catching 23 trout, J D Bowsen of Brownsville 28 trout, Sam Norwood of Fort Worth 20 trout and 40 sheephead, Lee Mosler of Houston 46 trout, C V Kuree of Houston 32 trout. Live bait remains plentiful and shrimp supply looks good for weeks ahead. Winds were high but fishing was productive with a favorable outlook.
