Girl Scouts Mark 43rd Birthday In Port Isabel

A covered dish banquet at the Elementary school auditorium celebrated the 43rd anniversary of Girl Scouting. Rev. F. J. Marlin offered the invocation. Mrs. Stanley Thoroughman spoke on local growth, noting 75 scouts and 12 leaders from 40 two years earlier.

Fiesta Meeting Is Postponed Two Weeks

The Blessing of the Shrimp Fleet meeting at Port Isabel High School is postponed to Thursday March 24 to increase attendance. Last Thursday’s low turnout was due to conflicting engagements. On the 24th plans include a shrimp boil alongside the meeting with final details to be announced next week.

Williamson Auto Service designated area inspection station

The Williamson Auto and Marine Service of Port Isabel is named an auto inspection station for the area. It will save residents a trip to Brownsville, San Benito, or Harlingen for inspections. A reminder: inspection stickers must be on cars by April 15 or risk violation when driving without one.

Lions Club Reports Circus Is Success

Port Isabel Lions club reports the Hagen Brothers circus was a big success with a gain of about 350 for the signt conservation fund. The group thanks locals who bought tickets and members who helped with preparations. The fund provides eye tests and glasses for those in need and recently bought an eye testing machine for Port Isabel schools.

Legislators Invited To Area To See Netting Ban Effects

A five member sub committee of the House Game and Fish committee is invited to visit the Valley March 25 26 to study the impact of banning nets six months of the year and potential benefits of a year long ban on Laguna Madre fishing. The invitation comes from Tom Aycock and Evan Burst of Valley sports clubs. Sub committee members named include R N Cory Alonzo Jamison Amos R Martin Crainger Mellhany and Charles Murphy. They were chosen by Jack C Bryan. The group will consider House Bill 128 to ban nets year round in Cameron county waters.

Mr and Mrs Andrew Zizinia announce the birth of a daughter at Mercy hospital Brownsville weighing seven pounds five ounces. The child had not been named at press time.

Yellowfin Tuna Found Near Port Isabel

Offshore anglers report near shore yellowfin tuna in Gulf waters, with C. E. Nickerson landing four fish over 120 pounds northwest of Port Isabel in 41 fathoms. He warns tackle must be strong, noting past losses and urging proper gear for future tuna fishing near Port Isabel.

Weekend Shipwrecks and Plane Crash Draw Local Attention

Fog shrouded Port Isabel as the banana boat Mercurio ran aground on Padre Island and a private plane made a rough landing on the beach. A shooting accident wounded a 14 year old boy, while residents aided by tugs and salvage crews worked to offload cargo and refloat the vessel. Leslie Rodriguez and Lyle Lynn were treated and released after minor injuries.

Drainage Structure Work Underway By Local Contractors

H B Zachry Co paving contractors began drainage work at intersections citywide this week. The first drain pipe was laid Tuesday near the Dr Hockaday home with more to follow. Heavy machinery has arrived, curb and gutter work will start after water mains are moved, and Uturia Street and North Shore Drive are next.

Miss Barrera Receives BA in Business Admin May

Miss Margaret Barrera daughter of Mrs Rafael Barrera of Port Isabel will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in May with a major in Business Administration and a minor in Secondary Education. She was initiated into Kappa Pi Sigma at Incarnate Ward College. The ceremony occurred on March 1.

Penguins to be sent from Antarctica to National Zoo

Six Emperor penguins captured in Antarctica by the crew of the USS Atka will be transported to the National Zoo in Washington D C. The zoo currently has no emperor penguins.
