Tarpon Relays Set for Port Isabel Friday
The Third Annual Tarpon Relays will be held in Port Isabel on Friday March 3 with nine AA schools expected. Prelims start at 1 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. A Relay Queen will be chosen at 5 50 p.m. from four class representatives. Participating schools include La Feria Sharyland La Joya Lyford Roma Zapata Marine Military Academy St. Joseph and Port Isabel. About twenty Port Isabel High students are slated to run and trophies awarded for top three in both individual and team events. The meet is open to the public.

Permits Recorded On Islands Reach New Totals
Building permits issued on South Padre Island last month totalled 148 500 while Port Isabel permits reached 47 652 for the month. Year to date on the Island total permits stand at 914 945 versus 366 980 for the same period in 1977. Port Isabel has issued 314 040 permits to date compared with 178 839 last year. Nuts left over from holiday cooking are suggested to keep in a nut bowl at room temperature briefly.

Band Plans for Educational Trip to Festival of the Rockies

Texas Mixed Drink Tax Rebates Pay Out statewide Sum
State comptroller Bob Bullock said Texans and visitors spent a record 540.5 million on mixed drinks last year with November and December totaling 144 million, the highest quarterly total since legalization seven years ago. Checks totaling 4.1 million were mailed to 196 counties and 334 cities from the 10 percent gross receipts tax with 10.2 million kept in the General Revenue Fund. South Padre Island received 1554.49 and Port Isabel 684.14. Counties will receive 2.1 million and cities 2 million from the latest rebates. The tax yielded 8.1 million to counties and 7.5 million to cities in 1977, while the state netted 38.3 million for the year. The tax is collected by the Alcoholic Beverage Commission with local shares defined by law.
