In a first person memoir, Jeff a popular detective sergeant is toppled by involvement in a local robbery. After a raid coverup, he is arrested then dies by hanging in his city jail leaving the town shocked and relieved he cannot return.
Port Isabel Bankers stay atop league standings with a 17 to 2 win over Pederson Sales as Ray Hinojosa takes the loss and Danny Delgado earns the win with 3 hits and 6 strikeouts. Delgado, Gustavo Rosales and Baby Barrera homer. Rosales adds 3 hits and 3 RBIs.
Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 72 offers free inspections for pleasure boats at Isabel Marina from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily June 29 to July 5. W. W. Zimmerman says the unit helps owners gauge seaworthiness and urges all Rio Grande Valley boaters to participate to prevent past sailing incidents.
Valley C of C president Shelly Collier Sr announces 18 annual membership meetings starting this week. Archie Taylor will report on regional activities. The Port Isabel Head Start program began Monday with 76 children enrolled. Five teachers lead classes in air conditioned rooms on the junior senior campus. Upon completion, students will be ready to enter first grade next year.
Carl R. Smith, former Point Isabel school district tax assessor collector, pleaded guilty to embezzling over $18,000 in school funds. He has refunded more than $1,000 to the bonding company. The jury recommended a five year penitentiary term with probation for five years and repayment of the remaining funds. Judge H G Garcia imposed the sentence.
James Bell son of Mr and Mrs Edgar R Bell of Port Isabel received a 100 prize for teaching in mathematics at the University of Oklahoma Norman He is a graduate assistant in mathematics Announcement by Dr Richard V Andree professor and chair of the math department notes he was among six recipients chosen by a committee of students course coordinators and department admins
The Los Fresnos Lions Club annual charity horse show is set for June 26 27 and 28 at Dean Porter Park Los Fresnos Entries are arriving for performing horses and events range from Children Western Horsemanship to Barrel and Rope Races plus Western Working Horse and Quarter Horse divisions The opening night features Sheriff s Posse color presentation and a full slate of competitive events across all ages with prizes awarded
Bankers, coached by Lupe Rosales, crushed DeKalb 24-1 last Tuesday as Casimiro Baby Barrera pitched a two hitter and Danny Delgado homered and drove in nine. Delgado went five for five and Enrique Delgado added a homer and two RBIs. Bankers meet Pederson Sales Thursday at 7:45 p.m.
The Los Fresnos Head Start program begins at 8 00 a m Monday June 16 at Los Fresnos Elementary School for eligible local children who have not attended school before. Registration for eligible children occurs the morning of June 16 in the school office. The program runs through Friday August 8 and is part of Cameron County Community Projects Inc.
City commissioners met with full attendance as Mayor Sanders reported his Austin trip where he protested the Long Island Utility District bill. The measure was amended to bar a separate water district for a new development.
