Local Rotary Club Marks Golden Jubilee Event

The Local Rotary Club celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a Gulf cafe ladies night banquet. Former Harlingen mayor Gene McCullough spoke on Rotary’s history and the Rotary Foundation supporting student exchanges and scholarships. Attendees included Mrs. Bama Binion and others. Ted Hunt led ceremonies as members signed the anniversary book for club archives.

The Port Isabel Quarterback Club announces a banquet next Thursday at the Gulf Cafe to raise funds for football and basketball squads and cheerleaders. Members should contact Archie Causey at Lighthouse Grocery for reservations. president J. L. Merryman hopes it becomes an annual event.

The Port Isabel Post of the American Legion and its auxiliary sponsor a covered dish supper at the Legion Hall starting at 7 pm. The post provides the meat course and tourist guests are asked to bring covered dishes such as salads and vegetables.

H B Zachry Co representatives announce drainage structure work will start next week with dirt moving and heavy equipment arrival in about two weeks. Cameron County Fresh Water supply district will relocate and deepen water mains before paving proceeds, with about 200000 dollars approved for paving. contractors will not backtrack for late signers. most units may finish within four months.

Ship 56 Sea Scouts Offer Yard Work For Fund Drive

At their regular meeting on Monday Ship 56 Sea Scouts set up a yard cleaning service to raise funds. Pairs of boys will rotate on odd jobs with 75 percent of earnings going to the ship fund and 25 percent to the workers. Call Leo Baumfelder or Curtiss Carpenter for yard work, garage or closet cleaning, and other odd jobs. The group also planned their annual explorer bivouac at Camp Perry in Rio Hondo in March.

Ward elected vice president of CLWV state group

Jeanene Ward a junior at Texas State College for Women is elected vice president of the state Campus League of Women Voters. She serves on the CLWV board at TSCW and will oversee conference arrangements for next year’s convention on the TSCW campus. She is the daughter of the Rev and Mrs Judson Briscoe Ward and majors in occupational therapy.
