The Port Isabel Volunteer Ambulance gains local backing as the community funds and prepares for a new unit. Residents are thanked for meeting financial obligations and volunteering, with weekly updates from the Port Isabel Press and Jack Merryman.
The annual Valentine Coronation at the high school auditorium on Friday February 15 begins at 7 45 p m The Port Isabel Parent Teachers Association sponsors the event with the theme Over the Rainbow Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children Proceeds go to the PTA general fund.
L. D. Cummings was appointed manager of Eagle Pass Lumber Co after formerly owning Edcouch Lumber and Supply Co. He will be joined by his wife Barbara and children Carol Bobby and Jean within a week or ten days. The family plans to live in the company home on North Railroad Ave. Cummings has about ten years in the lumber business.
The Port Isabel Shrimp Fiesta Boosters Club meets tonight at 8 pm at the Legion Hall to discuss electing officers for the Shrimp Fiesta and the annual installation supper. Details on the dinner time and venue will be announced when plans are finalized.
The Valley Sea Scouts Skippers and Mates Club held its quarterly meeting at the Palmetto Inn on Padre Island. Members from Port Isabel Brownsville Harlingen Mercedes Weslaco and guests discussed the 1957 summer cruise planned for May 26 to June 1 and potential Corpus Christi extension.
Albert S. McGehee directed the Parks and Causeway for Cameron County as the Southwest Park and Recreation Institute, sponsored by Tech, met at Lake Murray Lodge near Ardmore OK. Sixty five specialists from ten states spoke on topics from turfgrass management to park illumination. Workshops summarized at general sessions. Dr. Waldo Stevens of Oklahoma City was to speak at the banquet.

The ceremony is set for Saturday morning, marking the second such honor for a Port Isabel boy in three years, following Tom Kennedy’s previous recognition.
January Bay anglers report strong trout yields with Pederson and Mrs. Murfiedsoe claiming 105 trout, Roberson and mates landing 68 each, plus a party led by Cashinta securing 240 trout in brisk surf fishing on the jetty.
Anglers from Houston Des Moines Hutchinson Plainview and other towns catch numerous trout with occasional redfish and drum. Notable entries include Henry Weekrely James Roberson Ara Breedlove and more reporting sizes from 10 to 63 trout with a few other species noted.
Henry Weckrely of Kansas and Charlie Berry of Port Isabel caught trout and two redfish while fishing the jetty on Sunday February 3. Dr EB L Sullivan of San Benito landed ten trout in a separate outing.
Fishermen Vic Johnson and John Rand of Des Moines and L M Beebe of Kansas reported 66 trout along with three pompano and a 40 pound drum. Fred Heyser of Cisco Texas caught nine trout and a 10 pound drum. Cleo Pe reportedly landed 59 trout.
