Lighthouse Relights At Port Isabel After Fifty Years

The Port Isabel lighthouse, built in 1852, was dark for five decades until January 27 when the State Park board resumed operation with Coast Guard approval. Once a signaling aid during wars, it faced closure after 1905 and during the Civil War.

Deanery Meeting Set by Brownsville Catholic Council

Loning Planning Group Elects New Officers For Year

The city planning and zoning commission elected Leo Baumfelder as chair, Fred Petch as vice-chairman, and Mrs. Lee A. Smith as secretary for the coming year. Visitor Naya Perez, city commissioner, attended. The group reviewed past projects and noted about 90 percent of recommendations had been adopted by the city council.

Pooches Train for March All Breed Show in Brownsville

Thirty dog owners attended the first session of free weekly training in Brownsville Sunday afternoon with an equal turnout Monday night at Donna City Park. The sessions prep both dogs and handlers for the All Breed Dog Show set for March 15. Rio Grande Valley Kennel Club president Henry L. noted strong local interest and a likely large entry.

Four Directors Added To CPL Board

Four new members were elected to the Central Power and Light board. Lon C. Hill announced Richard King of Corpus Christi Albert Martin of Laredo Claude K. McCan of Victoria and Lt General Robert W. Harper of Harlingen will join CPL. King, a rancher and banker, chairs Corpus Christi National Bank and sits on several boards. Martin, a longtime Laredo leader, ran the city as mayor and serves on multiple companies.

Eight new paying signers are added to the list of progressive citizens who have signed for paying of streets adjoining their property during the past week. Included are Chas. Diphtheria Scare Now Under Control

Diphtheria threat in Port Isabel area appears controlled after cultures from family contacts reveal four children and one adult with diphtheria bacillus. Booster and initial toxoid injections will be offered at four weekly Well Baby Clinic sessions beginning Feb. 4 at the home economics building, Junior High, with no charge.
