The Coffin and its Contents During 1814 at Castine
During the summer of 1814 British forces seized Castine to control the Penobscot river. Commodore Tucker bagged a British frigate by a ploy involving a coffin on his schooner. A supposed widow sought to deliver her husband’s body to Wiscasset, but hidden danger lay within the coffin: four pistols, gunpowder, and a trip-tied torpedo. Tucker uncovers the plot, captures the conspirator, and sermonizes on prudence as Semin nears port.
