Irrepressible conflict frames North and South in 1861
A lengthy Republican era piece argues sectional war is inevitable, blaming slaveholding leaders in the South and duplicity in the North. It attacks abolitionist arguments, defends federal authority, and praises Secretary Chase while denouncing compromise with rebels. The piece also notes Congress actions and Civil War battlefield reports, including Virginia and Kanawha actions.
