Reminiscences of a Schoolmaster’s Early Teaching

A veteran educator recalls starting a country school, teaching two boys Luke Weston and James Shute, and learning through their contrasting talents. Weston’s slow pace and discipline mistakes led to a harsh punishment and his departure to a trade, while Shute excelled in arithmetic, language, and grammar, later becoming a bank bookkeeper. Years later, the narrator discovers Weston’s rise to political prominence and Shute’s stable career, underscoring the long arc from classroom to life outcomes.
