Portrait of a Civil War Army March in Meigs County
A long wartime eyewitness piece chronicles Sherman’s Division marching from Moscow to Memphis July 18 1862. It details regiments 72d Ohio 48th Ohio and 53d Ohio marching with trains of 200-plus wagons, foraging for provisions, and the rough wear of soldiers. The narrative contrasts brave volunteers with the “Castor Oil Brigade,” notes foraging behavior, and reflects on loyalty, duty, and the somber death of a nearby guard while nearing Memphis. The writer also shares contemporary letters from Meigs County residents commenting on local politics and Union sentiments amid the war.
