Polking Around and Bean Day Reflections in Polk

A light column recalls Jeffery Lynn Heiden’s first haircut at six weeks and memories of Doane College ties. A 1908 Rambler visit by Howard Raish links Doane’s 1940 class to local life as the author, a 1940 Doane grad, notes aging and conversation. Beans Day used 52 eggs for coffee, with 26 pots and unknown pot size. Political and local notes cover Senator Jackson, Senator Stennis, Governor Wallace, and budget questions. A burro near the Progress office greets visitors, then weeklong newsroom chaos follows Bean Day with a new Kluge press soon arriving.
