Johnson-Creech Wedding Rites Performed Sunday

Miss Annette Johnson and Wayne L. Creech wed in a 3:30 p.m. Sunday ceremony at Polk with 125 guests. Rev. Elwood Anderson officiated, flowers and music featured, and guests included numerous relatives from Polk and surrounding towns. The couple, Polk High graduates, plan a teaching career and a postnuptial move to a farm east of Polk after a Black Hills honeymoon.

Polk Edges Burg 6 to 0 In Season Opener

Polk beat Burg 6 to 0 in the season opener at the Viking field. Gaylen Holmes scored the only Polk touchdown in the second quarter. Bob Renquist anchored the Polk defense, thwarting Burg breakaways. Stromsburg’s Lind and Marlin Johnson stood out on offense for Stromsburg.

Polio Cases Rise in Community Health Update

Polio cases increase since last Progress edition with Shirley Gordon, Chuckie Peterson as early victims. Regy Green was declared polio patient last Thursday morning. The Sid Crow family lost three children to polio, Calvin hospitalized in Lincoln, two lighter cases at home. Kendall Lambdell, son of Mr and Mrs Sandell, Polk’s seventh victim, hospitalized in Grand Island.

William Kingsley Suffers Hand Injury at Silo

William Kingsley sustained a severe hand injury while filling a silo. His left thumb’s first joint was severed when it was caught beneath a wagon box as it was lowered into position, requiring amputation back to the first joint.

Polk High Sets Football Admission Rates for Conference

After surveying charges among conference schools Polk High announced rates matching most peers with adults 60 cents and high school students 35 cents while charging 15 cents for grade students. The table lists Osceola 50 and 35, Polk grade 16, St Paul 30 for high and grade 30, Silver Creek 60, Stromsburg 60, and Genoa not shown.

Polio Assistance Urged Through Polk County March of Dimes

Edith Heilman of the Polk County National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis urges families with a diagnosed polio case to contact the Orceola chapter. The Polk chapter provides patient care funds with half of March of Dimes receipts kept locally for aid, and the rest sent to national HQ for research and education. Local funds can be supplemented by national support if needed. Telephone numbers listed as 5351 and 4661.

Leland Bills Returns Home From Army Service

Leland Bills arrived home Monday morning after nearly two years of active duty in Korea. He was among 3480 Korean veterans who docked at San Francisco last week and saw front line action for many months. He was discharged at Camp Carson Colorado and now rests in inactive reserve. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Bills of the Arborville Community.

World Doyle Appleston birth at Stromsburg Hospital

World Doyle Appleston weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces born to C W C and Mrs Raymond Poland at Stromsburg Hospital on Tuesday September Y. Mrs Poland formerly Agnes Appleton resides with her mother Mrs Anna Appleton until joining her husband stationed in Germany.

Polk Houses Change Ownership

Two houses changed ownership last week. Merle Stromberg bought the Helen Isaacson house across from the Methodist Church. Clarence Bodine acquired the Strombergs' former home one and a half blocks east of the hotel. Both plan to move in sometime in the next month.

Election of officers across high school classes observed

The week featured officer elections for Seniors Juniors Sophomores and Freshmen with scores of names including Ervin Schulze Allan Ziegelbein Lois Light Beverly Feetzke and Janice Wilshusen among others The Pep Club also elected officers Miss Hunt sponsored the club The Thursday snake dance rally drew many students and townspeople with football fans riding Marvin Tredrickson's truck to the rally and Polivos Stromsburg game excitement noted
