In a rough opening game Polk fell to the Stromsburg Indians who showed more good than bad football. The column notes the Cubs will not win all games but won’t lose them all either as the season begins. Also recaps bean cookout and clock woes with light local anecdotes and quotes from Washington Lincoln and Grant.
Conservation Officer Don Schaepler moved from Valley to Arapahoe in south central Nebraska, effective September 1. He joined the Game Commission in August 1960 and previously served at Valley as his only permanent station.
Polk Bean Days proceeds despite rain threats with the children's parade postponed to afternoon and the Horse Show canceled. Bobby Mills orchestra drew a crowd after the Stromsburg football game while bean cooking began at 745 as showers eased. Picnicgoers enjoyed beans and ham with coffee as Bohemian band entertained. Parade winners included Doc Hadley’s Medicine Show and the Schnackenberg twins with Scotty Werner and the Killion children.
John Hascoolidge of Polk plans to open his barber shop this Saturday Sept 15 if his license comes through in time. He completed tests Monday and informed the Progress office Tuesday uncertainty remains whether doors will open Saturday, with Tuesday as alternative date.
Osceola hosts an Elementary Institute this Friday for K through 6 teachers. No school for students in grades Kindergarten through 6th.
Polk High reserve football team announces revised game dates with Clarks on September 24, Stromsburg on October 1 in Stromsburg, Palmer on October 8, and home games against Silver Creek on October 15 and Osceola on October 30. All games at 7:30 PM.
The PTA schedules its first meeting of the year in the grade school auditorium on Wednesday September 19. New teachers will be introduced and welcomed by attendees.
The August Polk Garden Club meeting at Mrs. Wes Harless drew 14 members and 3 visitors. Ester Lackey led a program on Arrangements with Vegetables. Bean Day plans were set as three large exhibit tables filled show windows shelves with bouquets fruit and vegetables were displayed and the silver tea drew many attendees despite bad weather.
Stromsburg bursts in second half to rout Polk 25 to 2 after a 6 2 halftime margin. Denny Quick scores twice and runs 124 yards on nine carries as Burg gains 206 rushing yards and dominates after intermission. Polk’s lone score comes on a botched punt safety and final Burg scores cap the night.
