Grapes Ship From Pawnee County Vineyard Amid Poor Grain Outlook
W H Bechtel loaded the first carload of Pawnee county grapes for western Nebraska points. Four years after planting 20 acres of vines, he expects about seven carloads with 80 percent of a full crop despite adverse weather. About 40 pickers are harvesting as ground failures in grain farming pushed grape growing.

Sugar Beet Harvest Set to Start in North Platte Valley
Sugar making will begin October 3 as six Great Western Sugar factories in Scottsbluffs Lyman Minatare Bayard Mitchell and Gering start slicing. The 2023 crop covers about 76 000 acres up from 75 000 last year with an estimated 12.5 tons per acre, above last year’s 12. About 246 workers will be employed across the six mills.
