Polk Cubs conquer Burg 7 0 on crowded local gridiron

Polk High defeated Stromsburg Vikings 7 to 0 in a hard fought game before a large crowd. Derald Johnson blocked a punt, Eugene Klingsporn recovered it, and Kenny Upton plus Roger Long drove Polk to the one yard line before Derald Johnson scored and converted. Duane Sterner filled in at quarterback for Walden Volz as Polk secured its fifth straight win and rose to second in the Goldenrod standings. The report also notes a community pheasant feed for over 70 at the Odd Fellows Hall that evening.

Free Mission choir to present song service on Sunday

County Extension News on Air Across Polk County

Polk County will broadcast Saturday November 8 at 11 00 am on KMMJ Grand Island with Miss Crosby hosting the 1948 Women's Extension program. Weather permitting men will roll corn pickers while homemakers enjoy a talk and a farm tip from County Extension Agent R A Stewart of Knox County. A bin of wheat appeared to move to a jitterbug tune revealed as weevil damage averted. Extension Circular No 74 on Controlling Insect Pests In Stored Grain is available at the office.

Campaign Urges Precision Livestock Care to Boost Meat Output

The American Foundation for Animal Health launched a six point program to curb feed waste and disease this winter. It urges disease free stock, quarantine, sanitation, disposal of infected animals, vaccination, and wise feeding with veterinary supervision to protect meat supplies. It notes Brucellosis as a major risk and calls for annual testing and farmer participation at the Polk County Livestock Improvement Association meeting.

Recreational Training Meeting Invites Polt County Leaders

Polt county youth group leaders are invited to a regional recreational training session in Columbus from December 4 to 6. Polk School Opens Auditorium With Conference Basketball Game

Osceola high school plans an official auditorium opening by hosting a basketball game with Goldenrod Conference coaches and the nationally known girl red head team led by Coach Wilhelms. Pep Club promotes victory and funds for new basketball uniforms through posters, streamers, popcorn sales, and pencil sales printed with the schedule. The pep rally and band performance boosted student and community spirit ahead of Friday night game.

Corn Picking Underway in Polk County and Navy Office Opens

Corn picking in Polk County is progressing toward a target finish around the 16th. Yields look near 20 bushels per acre after a tough season, with late rains improving prospects. Mechanical shucking speeds up work, some fields seen lit for night harvesting. Polk County Hybrid Seed corn growers listed with multiple state origins. Royal Neighbors and Woodmen Host Halloween Party

Jake Harding dressed as a big black bear won best costume at the Royal Neighbors and Modern Woodmen Halloween party in Hardville Friday. About 50 attended. T. G. Slater won ladies best costume with Vern Jones honorable mention. T. G. Slater was men’s runner up. Frankie Harding topped the children's division as a red devil. Patty Jones impressed with Rags and Tags. Shirley Hahn and the Hills received honorable mention. The evening included games and pie doughnuts and coffee.

Polk Youth Kills Deer in Polk County Crash

Dean Samuelson aged 19 was driving to a date when a 300 pound deer ran into his car east of Polk. The impact severely damaged the vehicle and killed the deer. Polk County Attorney Philip Heyberg arranged for the carcass to be given to a state institution. Mr and Mrs Gus Mayo of Garden City Kansas visited Tuesday at the home of Mr and Mrs J C McClure.

VA to aid veterans on Nebraska college campuses

The Veterans Administration will send a VA representative to each Nebraska college campus in the second week of November to help veterans who did not receive subsistence allowance checks. Ashley Westmoreland of the VA in Lincoln says the effort aims to expedite payments and reduce hardship. He notes over 18 million dollars in subsidies were paid to Nebraskan veterans in 1946 47 and expects a heavy workload but believes personal interviews will improve service.
