Prof A L Lang of the University of Illinois urges farmers to base soil improvement on tests indicating lime and organic matter needs. He says low organic matter and strong acidity require lime, nitrogen, and proper fertilizers, plus legume hay to rebuild soil over years for higher, permanent productivity.
Michigan State College tests show clipped cows yield milk with lower bacteria counts. Researchers found bacteria levels are two to four times higher in milk from unclipped cows compared with properly clipped cows.
Automatic controls reduce farm labor with a proximity switch that opens gates when cows gather for milling time. The Minneapolis-Honeywell device works with an automatic timer to prevent gates from opening too soon.
