Lawrence Ackerman a lifelong Polk Street figure dies at Central City hospital

Lawrence Ackerman died Thursday at Central City hospital and was buried Saturday in Stromsburg cemetery. A loner known on Polk’s Main Street, he rode a bicycle, drove a prewar Chevy, fed animals with leftovers, owned 80 acres east of town, moved a rural school near the road, and showed deep curiosity about mechanics. He collapsed riding his bicycle on the highway and was carried to the hospital.
