Thousands and thousands of Sandhill Cranes at Platte River
The writer and Swede Lind observe huge flocks of sandhill cranes along the Platte River west of Doniphan. Cranes circle, feed, and take off in constant movement, resisting close approach. photographers may capture in-flight shots, but the birds resist counting and photos cannot convey the sight. The piece notes their wary nature, the annual mating cycle, and wishes for a successful hatch.
