National youth leaders return from Lincoln Governor meets them
Natalie Hahn and Douglas Sundberg returned from Lincoln where they were chosen by the American Legion Auxiliary and the American Legion to represent Polk posts at Girls' State and Boys' State last week. Natalie served on the Girls' State Merit System Council and on a panel moderated by Secretary of State Frank Marsh. Douglas worked in the Department of Veteran Affairs and heard a welcome by Mayor of Lincoln and a speech by Governor Frank Morrison.

Dick Shockey of York turned 91 on June 19 and was honored at a Wednesday birthday dinner at the Polk home of his niece, Mrs. D N Mills. Family members, including another niece Mrs. Pete Schrader and great nephew Glenn Schrader, attended. The meal featured outdoor barbecued chicken and a birthday cake. It was his first charcoal broiler meal.

WSCS Meets In The Swede Plain Church
The June meeting of the Wo men s Society for Christian Ser vice of Swede Plain met in the church with Mrs. Bill Lavelle leading the prayer service. President Mrs. Walter Stohl presided over the business meeting. Program leaders were Mrs. Harvey Lind and Mrs. Wallace Lind. The program topic was Facing the Challenge of Missions. A song was sung by Dorothy, Janice and Dolores Anderson. Musical numbers were furnished by Diane, Donna and Dwayne Bodine. Polk County Sets 1962 Wheat Price Support at $2.08
The 1962 national minimum for wheat is $2.00 per bushel with Polk County setting a local minimum of $2.08. Rates are 19 cents higher than 1961 levels and may rise at the July 1 marketing year start if supply and parity indicate. Rye minimum is $1.03 with unchanged class grade premiums except protein now sedimentation premiums.

Northeast conservationists join Bootstrap pasture tour
A group of 24 Work Unit Conservationists and district supervisors from northeast Nebraska led by Area Conservationist Ralph Grenier of Blair attended the Polk County Operation Bootstrap pasture and livestock tour Friday afternoon. Attendance ranged from 75 to 100 as the tour visited farms of Harley Warner, Ted Johnson, Wwi mer Johnson, and Ray Nyffeler in the Osceola Stromsburg area. A new stand of birdsfoot trefoil with cool and warm season grass.

Early hatching corn rootworms hit central Nebraska
University of Nebraska entomologists report corn rootworms are hatching earlier in central Nebraska by about a week to 10 days. They found larvae in untreated plots and volunteer corn, with only a few in experimental planted corn. Farmers should monitor fields and consider base sprays with diazinon if infestation threatens crops.

Darwin Hahn was selected to the national high school All American basketball team, one of fifteen Nebraskans on the list. He also earned football All American honors, making him the only Nebraska athlete to appear on both squads.
