All Pork stores will be closed next Wednesday July 4th in observance of the national holiday. To aid shoppers they will stay open Tuesday evening until 11 o clock p.m. The weekly band concert moves to Tuesday evening July 3rd instead of Wednesday.
Rev and Mrs Edick Anderson hosted a devotional and social for about twenty five Hordville Baptist young people and church members at their farm last Thursday. Maynard Johnson led devotional time and explained several curios from India collected during his service. Eugene Jones read Scripture and Jed offered prayers as Mrs Anderson provided refreshments.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive exam to fill the Shelby postmaster vacancy. Full details and applications available at the Shelby post office or CS Commission in Washington, D C. Applications must be filed in Washington by July 12, 1945.
A reception for Sgt Russell Bush and his wife was hosted by Mr and Mrs Ester Lackey at their home. Yellow and white decor highlighted the porch and lunch tables. A three tier cake with a miniature bride and groom topped the center. Mrs Bush wore a gold wedding dress and Mr Bush in uniform. About 90 relatives attended. Mrs Eldon Anderson of York managed the guest book and Miss Nora Mae Cline of Lincoln the gift table.
Thousands of used airplane tires from Europe are offered through the Office of Surplus Property by sealed bid. The tires cover about half of all sizes, suitable for tractors, automobiles, combines, and horse drawn vehicles, with many having served in Germany Burma or Africa.
Mrs. Foster Scott and her children spent Monday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. George Colby near Silver Creek.
Osceola Record editor W. J. Herbes was quiz winner on Bob Hawk’s Thanks To The Yanks program aired on KFAB. He and his wife attended from New York and asked that 2000 Camels be sent to a Navy relative in Texas, prompting many local calls to the office.
County Extension notes favorable wheat prospects with a grower predicting up to 50 bushels and urges holding wheat on the farm until fall shipments. Albert Swanson plans large corn harvest aided by ammonium nitrate and irrigation, while Ray Pierson assists in soil conservation plans. A local soybean trial aims to improve fertility on weedy land. 4-H Judging Day set for June 29 at Osceola High School with Miss Rizpah Douglass.
Rev Ben Finstrom, a returned missionary from India, will lecture at the Baptist Church in Hordville next Sunday at 11 o clock. He will display many Indian curios for exhibition and the public is invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Emil S F Johnson and Mrs Harvey Drum with Janet Sue hosted Sunday luncheon near Polk. Annete Larson returns to Stromsburg Bank duties after vacation. Fr Philip Erickson from Westover MA visited family in Stromsburg area. Atkinson and Blevins families shared Sunday calls near Shelby and in Columbus. Osceola guests included Malek family and Lt Richard Malek at Hultquist home. Drowning update on Russell Anderson in Pendleton Oregon: boat capsize in 135 feet water. body not yet found.
Mrs Britta Anderson Norstrom aged 94 years 10 months 28 days died June 21 1945 at her daughter’s home Polk Nebraska Funeral services were held at Polk Methodist Church with Rev A C Bates officiating She was born in Sweden immigrated to the United States in 1879 lived in Polk County Nebraska and leaves four grandchildren one great grandchild and several friends

Mary Olive Anderson Nelson born September 24 1880 in Franas Smaland Sweden. She married August Nelson on April 12 1899 and seven children were born. The Nelsons moved to Polk October 12 1912 and she joined the Baptist Church May 14 1913. She died June 23 at age 64 years 8 months 30 days after a hospital operation. She was a practical nurse and community cook known as the Good Neighbor with 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Sunday visitors from Omaha and Grand Island joined local hosts for refreshments. The WSCS M B and B Church plans a July 5 hobby exhibit with organizers urging participation and visitors. Local families hosted others including Goings hiring as Polk school’s new coach and Luther College graduate. The Olsons returned from Medicine Lake Minnesota after attending the Evangelical Free Church national conference.
Miss Ruth Shustrum of Stromsburg resigns as deputy county clerk after one year effective June 25. She will move to Stromsburg to serve as assistant postmaster. Miss Hazel Sundberg of Stromsburg assists Mr. Anderson in the office until a new deputy is hired.
Mrs. Chas. McGinnis reports her grandson Dean McGinnis with the army of occupation near Verdun France. Ralph Willits left for Alameda after a fifteen day leave with his parents. Paul Gustafson, from Catalina Island training, sent a June 6 letter from the SS Edward Cantyco in the South Pacific noting good food and lack of seasickness. He expects to circle the globe and mentions not shaving since departure.
Summer arrives with warm dry conditions aiding farmers who have most corn in the ground. A light rain fell Saturday night and York reports cloudburst rains up to six inches in some areas. Community notices include picnics and social gatherings among ministers families at Central City, young people events, and visits among locals from Hordville Hastings Lincoln Omaha and Marquette.
Residents question why the town’s street lights do not brighten on Wednesday and Saturday nights as in past years. On a busy Saturday, Main Street lacked the expected brightness despite many cars, appearing dark and gloomy.
Rev Chindvall is the new pastor of Hordville Lutheran Church moving into the parsonage this week and will preach his initial sermon next Sunday. He comes from the Seminary at Rock Island Illinois where he was ordained this spring after study at the University of Nebraska Luther College and Augustana College. He earned an AB and a BD from Augustana Seminary upon ordination at Moline.
Mrs. Lloyd Hahn and Mrs. Vergil Kisler of the Methodist Church Children’s Society led 21 children on a tour of the Mother Jewels Home in York where 65 children are cared for. A brief program followed and the group enjoyed a picnic lunch at North Park. Mrs. Irvin Anderson and Mrs. Forrest Anderson provided car transportation.
Mr and Mrs C J McCoy celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on Sunday June 24 with all five daughters present. Daughters hosted a turkey dinner and family reunion marked eight years since the last gathering. Out of town relatives included Mrs Donald Springer and family of Minneapolis and Miss Gladys McCoy of Denver.
