State chemist Mr. Frisbie reports sixteen drinks tested in Nebraska contain not more than .49 percent alcohol. The law permits up to one half of one percent. Frisbie still tests twenty four more drinks from a forty sample collection.
A J Knott, Commonwealth Insurance agent, will manage a dry cleaning business in Quillen's barber shop. He offers quick suit cleaning and pressing and can provide Commonwealth Life Insurance. C O Eckles displays fireworks in the north window. Rev Albert Nelson is due home this week from Minnesota. C F Hahn and family visited Surprise last Sunday with Otto family relatives of the Habbns. Joe Bailey, former Union Pacific agent, now based in Oshkosh. Alex Lind heads to Omaha then St Paul to assist hail loss adjustments.
The government sought 2 billion for war purposes and the people pledged nearly 3 billion in subscriptions across society from millionaires to workers. Youth and Boy Scouts also contributed as the first and largest loan in world history, with fifty percent subscribed. The Kaiser should worry.
The Mitchell Players closed a successful winter stock season at Grand Island Nebraska led by Miss Martha Edwards and H Chas Robinson. Owner manager Mr Mitchell brings a 15 member company for the summer season at Michaelson Theatre with royalty plays and high class vaudeville between acts. Polk will be the one week program with nightly changes and scenic effects.
At the close of a morning sermon in the Methodist church Dr J D M Buckner received a telegram announcing the death of his son Clyde Buckner. He was the youngest of three sons of Dr and Mrs Buckner and had been ill for years. The funeral will be held locally. One brother is a lawyer in New York City and the other a minister at Bradshaw. Ed Larson is repainting his house with his Central City based brother handling the work. Pistols caps and various Fourth of July novelties are sold at the Variety store.
The President calls unmarried men aged 18 to 40 to enlist in the Regular Army during June 23 to June 30. Enlisting today offers rapid advancement and opportunities in both commissioned and noncommissioned ranks. Eligible men may take commissioned examinations anytime after enlistment. merit governs advancement. The Postmaster will accept eligible applications and arrange transport to the nearest recruiting station.
The government aims to build and send 100 000 airplanes to France at once using American pilots. The plan vows sacrifice of many young lives to save hundreds in trenches and argues the air advantage will blind German forces, hastening victory.
Directors of the Farmers Grain Association and manager L C Glad with wives gave a house warming surprise to employee L E Curren and wife last Saturday. Guests presented $30 to let them choose their own gift and refreshments were served.

Epworth League hosts a get together at Putmans farm for a patriotic Sunday on July 1 with 10:00 Sunday School 11:00 sermon and 7:00 concert. Ice cream social free for all meets at Dorsey store and cars provided leaving at 8:00 for a front deck gathering.
