Births Rise in Nebraska for 1928 Amid Overall Decline

Nebraska records show 28 029 births in 1928 up from 27 866 in 1927, with 14 415 boys and 13 614 girls. Despite the rise, the rate per 1 000 population fell to 19.1. Twins numbered 356 and triplets 4. over 20 percent of births occurred in hospitals. Fewer births occurred among negro and Indian parents.

Five anglers haul huge Blue River catfish catch

Wilber residents Fred Zwonechek and his sons John and Harold along with Victor Kral reported an exceptional catch from the Blue River below Wilber. A 28 pound catfish about forty five inches long led the haul, taken on set lines while rain likely improved bite. John Zwonechek reached for the fish as it tipped, threading his arm through its gills to help bring it aboard.
