A reader recounts a bearded loner seen walking along Highway 81 north of York, carrying a bedroll and wearing a wide brimmed hat. The man, silent and elusive, resembles Polk’s famed year round tramp who preferred walking to riding in cars.
The 95th Polk County Fair opens Sunday July 26 with rodeo and horseshoe pitching. Week features include an 8:00 P M rodeo continuation, a 8:30 P M demolition derby, a 5:00 P M free barbecue, a tractor pull, the 4 H Market Beef Sale at 3:00 P M, 4 H program in the evening, and a Teen Dance at 9 concluding the 1970 edition. Ray Conrad seeks help with barbecue serving.
Local youth baseball and softball action drum up support as 9- to 11-year-olds prepare for a Waco tournament starting next Thursday with Polk at 8:00. Older boys beat Benedict 9-7 while the younger team lost the opener. 9-11 group fell 8-7 at Shelby on Monday. The 15-17 crew continued its winning run. Girls schedule a July 24 triple header with Benedict on the local diamond. Donations reported during the week total 610.71 with multiple smaller contributions listed.
Polk girls edged Clarks 7-6 on their home field in a seesaw contest. Phyllis Ostberg led the offense with 4 singles while JoAnn Stevens and Gall Widga contributed multiple extra-base hits as Polk overcame a late Clarks surge before injuries dampened Friday’s game.
Mr and Mrs Donald Schaepler of Arapahoe Nebraska announce the engagement of their daughter Deborah Dana Kay to Leon Harder son of Mr and Mrs Charles Harder Holdrege Nebraska Miss Schaepler attends Kearney State College and Mr Harder a Kearney State College graduate Phi Kappa Tau Speech Therapist for Educational Service Unit No 11 Holdrege The wedding is set for August 21 Miss Schaepler is the granddaughter of Mrs Susan Gertsch and the late Gilbert Gertsch of this community
Alma Helena Oliver born June 25 1881 in Varna Illinois to Charles and Mary Stromberg died after July 21. She lived in Omaha later moved to Central City Merrick Manor and attended Grace Lutheran Church. Survived by two brothers four sisters and many relatives. Services were held in Central City with burial in Omaha.
Kay Nielsen is in Paris France studying the French language at Sorbonne University after several weeks of study she will travel through western Europe before returning in August to resume studies at the University of Nebraska where she is a mid term junior.
Dale A. Carlson of Silver Creek and Patrica Rose Ostberg of Stromsburg obtained a marriage license issued July 16. This notice records the couple’s names and the issuing location and date.

George Wright of Osceola died after a heart attack Friday afternoon at Annie Jeffrey Hospital. Funeral services were held Monday at Kepner-Roberts Mortuary Osceola with burial in Polk Cemetery. Survived by wife Charlotte two sons two daughters brother William Osceola sister Mrs Martha Bush Clarks several nieces and nephews. Preceded by parents one son who died in infancy one brother Charlie and a California sister and several grandchildren. The Wright family lived in Polk before moving to Osceola.
The Kordsmen Quartet will present a program at the United Methodist Church in Polk on Thursday evening July 23 at 8 00 PM A free will offering will be collected and the public is invited to attend.
