Severe hail battered two Polk County regions Friday night near Osceola and Sunday near Shelby. Witnesses described ice that damaged corn, soybeans, trees, roofs, and windows, with flash floods and widespread debris. No injuries reported. residents began temporary repairs Monday morning.

Polk’s Bean Days planning began at a Commercial Club session on Monday night with Director Lloyd Stromberg assigning committees. Richardson dies after long illness at Grand Island
W. Richardson, born Tucumcari New Mexico March 16 1910, son of Joseph and Clara Richardson, married Mildred Meerkatz in 1935. A Navy veteran and farmer, he died July 7 at the Veterans Hospital Grand Island. Funeral July 10 at Immanuel Lutheran Polk with burial in Immanuel cemetery. Surviving wife two children four grandchildren two sisters and a brother.

Don Morris Completes Air Force Training at Lincoln AFB
Donald E. Morris of Stromsburg completed four weeks of Air Force training at Strategic Air Command's Lincoln AFB. A member of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Nebraska, he is the son of Mr and Mrs Adolph T. Morris and a Polk High School graduate. He will be eligible for appointment as a second lieutenant after graduation.

Moisture supplies for the week ending Saturday show rainfall at trace with surface and subsoil moisture adequate. Crop conditions report irrigated corn sorghums and alfalfa excellent with winter wheat and oats fair and all others good. Fifteen percent of irrigated corn tasseling ten percent of non irrigated corn. Two percent winter wheat ripe ninety eight percent harvested and twenty five percent eighty five percent on oats. Second cutting alfalfa sixty five percent cut. Pasture and range feed average. Main farm work includes harvesting of wheat oats and barley row crop cultivation irrigation and alfalfa hay. Very hot weather and irrigation of row crops noted. Wheat harvest progressing with fair yields. Cattle in summer pastures look good with ample feed.
