In Simi Valley Emalyne Blase notes Nebraska weather and jokes about 80 degree Christmas forecasts. The Progress staff recalls warm office scenes, Santa gags, fishing talk, and a quirky holiday week as the newspaper vows a return to normal publishing.
Albert Sundberg, partner in Sundberg Hardware set to retire January 1 1964 after 57 years in business begun with his father when Polk was founded. The store moved in 1924 to a larger building and sold farm items, harness sets, and later modern appliances. Sundberg’s son Dr Doyle Sundberg is a dentist in Sterling Colorado.
Mr and Mrs Don Wright of Lincoln announce the birth of a baby girl named Christine Ann at Lincoln General Hospital on Christmas morning weighing 8 pounds 10 1 2 ounces. Mrs Wright formerly Ruth Ziegelbein.
Mr and Mrs Ray Myers of Arco Idaho renew their subscription to Progress. They express enjoyment in staying in touch with hometown happenings and send holiday wishes including a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Kenneth Stewart Joyce and Don joined Harold Rhodes at Utica for Christmas Eve and Day. The Stewarts stayed with Paul and Martha Larson in Dorchester. Carl Christiansen and Joleen from Lincoln visited Martha and Theo Larson. Walter Fisher and family hosted Mrs. Fisher’s son’s family. Lester Widga and Stromsburg guests joined Lloyd Widga and Verland Widga families along with Irene Carlson.
The Polk Garden Club earns praise for holiday decor along Main Street. Mrs. Marie Hoffman and Mrs. Marjorie Lindholm hang bright baskets at the four corners. Windows feature simulated snow, centerpieces, wreaths, and a crèche. Decorations were arranged by Mrs. Ester Lackey, Mrs. Robert Anderson, and Mrs. Harold Bedient.
The East Side Birthday Club met with Mrs. R. C. Werner a month early. A Take Away Bingo session preceded a gift exchange and cookie exchange. Names were drawn for the coming year as lunch was served using Christmas decor on napkins and doilies.
Mrs. Hennie Seymour returned home from Osceola hospital on Saturday December 21. Mrs. Elwood Sandell was dismissed from Central City hospital on Tuesday December 24 and is convalescing at her Polk home. Everett Green suffered a heart attack Friday and was reported resting easily in a Lincoln hospital by Sunday evening. Marvin Shenk entered Aurora hospital on Saturday December 21. Mrs. Hennie Seymour was admitted to Osceola hospital Saturday evening December 21.
The Polk Progress reports 56 gifts in December with 27 new subscribers and 227 renewals. Renewals cover 1 to 3 years as gifts extend the newspaper to readers from California to Carolina and overseas.

Adolph Dose 85 a land owner and livestock feeder near Hampton died Saturday at his farm northeast of Hampton. Survived by widow Emma, two daughters Mrs. Walter Roehrs and Mrs. Clara Blase of York, and one son Gerhard Dose of Hampton. Body at Wall Funeral Home in Hampton. Services set for Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Hampton at 2:00 p.m.
The Home Society gathered for a Christmas meeting at Mrs. Ella Rudy's home. Randall C. Baird from the Nebraska Children's Home spoke of adopting children to happy homes. A social hour followed with poems and stories and a bountiful lunch. Next meeting set for January 15 with Mrs. Lydia Peterson.
