Origin of the Roorback Rumor and Its Political Use
The term roorback stems from a defaming falsehood used in campaigns. A fictive work titled Travela of Bar on Roorback was cited in 1844 against James K. Polk, per Edward Conrad Smith's Dictionary of American Politics. Prints in the Ithaca Chronicle and Cyclopedia of American Government trace the word’s evolution.
