A Nebraska Centennial Commission tree planting committee aims to double annual tree growth by 1967. Chairman A James Ebel of Lincoln says land and manpower are needed alongside technical support as the state currently plants about 3 million trees each year.
The Polk High Cubs improved to 3 0 in Goldenrod Conference play with a 62 42 win over the Saints at St Edward Friday night. Max Kroger led with 25 points, Dennis Sealey 6, Sundberg 18, Kroger 13 rebounds while Sundberg 7 and Sterner 6. Reserves won 57 24 with Carlstrom 14 and Wilshusen 8. Next game is Friday Jan 4 at Bradshaw.
The Faithful Workers Club held a 1 PM luncheon on Monday December 17 at the Corner Cafe with 16 members. After lunch they gathered at Mrs Ester Lackeys home for a Christmas program and gift exchange, followed by refreshments.
Lunch guests at the Lowell Bills home after the Arborville church program included Leroy and Ruth Bills with family from Oklahoma City, Oscar and Max Jones with families, Robert Baack and family, and Chas Norquest hosted a Christmas Eve dinner for Bob Murray, Sally Norquest, and Myron Norquest with family.
The community reports a school Christmas program titled Light A Candle observed Monday. Walther League members caroled and shared refreshments at the school, with a gift exchange. Local visits include Mrs. Paul Budnick, Ione Mundt, Mrs. Carl Mundt at Covenant Home, plus various Tu rday and Sunday gatherings across area households. The Polk Progress notes editor Ma Williams of Scotia admired the local paper, Kennedy’s national address is cited, and charitable requests from Arborville Missionary Aid Society seek blankets clothing and quilt material for Algeria relief.
Funeral services for Alvin Ehn 53 were conducted at the Evangelical Free Church in Polk with Rev. Wm Pinkernell presiding. Ehn died after a brief illness in an Omaha hospital. he had lived in Omaha for twenty years and is survived by several relatives in Polk Minneapolis Scottsbluff St Libory Anaheim Hastings and Polk. Interment followed at Polk Cemetery Hastings. Next Week Obituary note: Mr and Mrs A E Sundberg traveled to Sterling Colorado to visit their son Dr Doyle Sundberg and family for Christmas.
The Sunday School of the Methodist Church staged "The Heart of Christmas" on Monday evening with Mrs. Dean Ostberg as pianist and Miss Jane Fredrickson as organist. Natalie Hahn sang "There is a Green Hill Far Away" as part of a program including a play "Christmas at the Inn" by Bob Lindburg and others, with scripture read by Donnette Ostberg.
Relatives gather for Christmases as Wilfred Stephens returns from West visit to Los Angeles and Tucson. Neighbors and friends share meals and attend programs with extended family from Stromsburg Central City Denver Harvard Bradshaw Seward Kearney Marquette Sargent Bluff and Rockford.
Mrs. Oto Wilshusen celebrated a birthday with a Sunday evening gathering at the Ervin Blase residence. Guests included Mr and Mrs Gilbert Driewer and families, Mr and Mrs Carl Blase and families, Mr and Mrs Herbert Blase and families, and Mr and Mrs Will Blase.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. A. Lytle and family from Augusta Kansas spent the Christmas holidays with Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Johnson, enjoying the festive home visit.
