This week the Progress reflects on funding and advertising woes and the idea that urgency overruns importance. It cites Gresham's law and laments a dimming future while proposing slower living and sunbeam powered fantasies as warnings and satire.
The document lists the Polk school year with dates for staff workshops, building meetings, school start August 29, holidays such as Labor Day Thanksgiving and Christmas, mid term and report card release dates, end of terms in March and May, holidays including Good Friday and Easter, and a final half day on May 18 with May 19 as the end of school.

The September 1 meeting of the UMW at Polk United Methodist Church starts at 9 a.m. in the church parlors. Mrs Al Magnuson will be the guest speaker. Members and friends are invited.
A 40 member high school choir from Evangelical Free Church Lincoln will perform an evening concert at Polk band stand next Sunday at 7 30 pm If rain occurs the concert moves to the Evangelical Free Church The article also notes local social visits and hospital discharge details for Marland Adelson and Anna Rau.

A Columbus open house Sunday August 21 marked the 55th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Van Bush. Many friends and relatives attended with daughters Harriet Stoki and Addie Goethe and their spouses from Lincoln Omaha and Arizona. cake and ice cream were served.
Mr and Mrs Lynn Sundberg announce the birth of a baby boy named Nolan David on August seventeenth. He weighed 8 pounds 15 ounces at birth. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dean Myers and Mr and Mrs Harvey Sundberg.
Mr and Mrs Pete Samusevich spent Saturday and overnight in Lincoln with Vance and Leilani Stohl before returning to Plainfield Illinois. Walter Stohl and Elmer Garner attended Faith United Church in Gibbon on Sunday and heard Rev Trucano. Nearby residents Nor and Mrs Jones returned from an 18 day visit in Redding California. Delights of gatherings extended to Rising City and Stromsburg with multiple family and neighbor visits across the week.
Wayne Swanson was a dependable worker and participant in the Summer Recreation Program. He announced most home ball games. Players or the mothers are asked to clean the ball uniforms and return them to the gas company office. Coaches with keys to the popcorn shack are asked to return them to Janice Saylor or Dwayne Miller.
Dale Kenny was among 34 graduates of a 300 hour basic course at the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island. The program, ending August 12, covers police practices, legal subjects, humanities, practical exercises, and examinations to upgrade professional standards.
A flurry of Friday to Monday social visits unfolds across Central City Glen Stevens Aurora Grand Island McCook Sutton Sutton Hastings Hastings and Kearney. Neighbors stop by for dinners coffee and family time with the Shostrom Widga Sundberg Willits Adelson and Nelson families and others.
Mrs Dwight Burney and Mrs Anna Kisler hosted a museum oven house in Osceola Sunday afternoon. Mrs Robert Stevens of Lincoln visited the Burney home Saturday evening.
