Polk Bean Day Set for September 12 in Polk

Seven Polk Students Win Wayne State Typing Awards

Wayne State College honors seven Polk students from a 854 student typing test cohort. Cheryl Johnson, Vicki Bjerrum, Lynda Van Ostrand, Myrna Merchant, Lois Willis, Lynda Myers, and Arlyce Lind placed from 7th to 113th. Dean Leigh notes 14 of 19 Polk students finished in the top half and all in the top 70 percent.

The Polk County Nebraska picnic is set for Sunday August 30 at 12 30 p m in Island Grove Park shelter house Greeley Colorado. Dinner coffee and cool drinks are furnished all former Polkites and friends invited to meet old acquaintances and enjoy the fifth annual gathering.

Former Resident To Undergo Surgery For Spine Fusion

Sheralyn Meerkatz a 15 year old daughter of Mrs Darlene Meerkatz will have vertebrae fusion surgery on August 26 at Mary Lanning hospital in Hastings to correct a back curvature. She is currently bedfast at home with a partial cast on one arm and leg and previously lived in the Polk community about seven years ago attending Polk Public School.

Family Dinner Honors Former Polk Residents

Friday evening August 14, a family gathering at the Polk Community Hall brought together fifty-six relatives and friends from near and far for a supper and song fest. William E Thompson of Wheatland Wyoming has joined Polk High School as a teacher for the 1964 65 year. He will teach American government citizenship and geography and work on the administration staff. He is Wesleyan University graduate with Nebraska study toward a masters degree. Mrs Walter Nielsen will teach sixth grade at Polk this year bringing years of experience. She previously taught four years in Loup City and last year split time in upper elementary grades at Hordville. The Nielsen family moved to Polk last year when Mr Nielsen became high school principal.
