In a breezy column from Polk County in 1950, the writer notes an unusually cool summer and questions how heat will affect corn maturity. The Nelson family reunion gathered sixty attendees at Osceola Park on Sunday. Relatives traveled from Audubon Iowa Milford Lincoln Kearney Clarks Stromsburg Osceola and Polk to attend.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Upton hosted the Upton family reunion on Tuesday August 1 at Ringo Nebraska. Nine Upton children were represented except one brother from Douglas Wyoming with an aunt and cousin from Winona Kansas joining. Homes listed include Nampa Idaho Topeka Kansas Dallas Texas Enterprise Kansas Edison Ringo and Polk Nebraska.
The Polk Library, started by the Womens Culture Club in 1913, has 560 books with librarian Mrs. J E McDaniel serving 34 years. Donations from residents and orders for about 75 new books yearly keep shelves diverse from Bibical volumes to classical works and magazines.
Sheralee Hill, 15, will represent Polk County in the State 4 H Health Contest this fall. She scored nearly perfect on a medical exam given by Dr. Gyllberg of Osceola and has six years of 4 H club work. Last year she was one of three Nebraska girls to win a Club Week trip in health work.
The Polk band members and their director received 20 cent treats after Monday evening band practice at Chuck's Cafe courtesy of Lloyd Stromberg. Mrs. Orlie Miller and guest Mrs. Ethel Gooding from Lincoln visited Saturday at the Frank Adelson home. Orlie Adelson and family of Abilene Kansas visit Frank Adelson’s parents. Weekend visitors in McPherson include Charles Carlson Ebba Hanquist Mrs. Augusta Johnson and son Harold.
Election trends show Peterson and Morrison leading their parties with Peterson winning a large local majority. Raede led for governor on the Democratic ticket, Warner led Swanson for Lt. Governor, Cornell over Braithwait and Robak for Sheriff in Polk County, Koehler tops for County Assessor, Elsie Cole over Robert Taddiken, Arthur Nelson for Commissioner Second District, and Lester Anderson ahead for State Senator. Voter turnout appears strong though full official totals await print next week.
Immanuel Lutheran Church schedules Sunday services at 9 30 and 10 45 a m with Sunday School at 10 15 a m next Sunday only Pastor C W Long leads devotions at the Ladies Aid meeting with 21 members present A no host lunch followed. Also notes visitors births and local family visits including Worried figures and Mother contest winner list.
A 1950 band concert program lists tunes by Klohr, DeLamater, Wood, Richards, and Bennett among others. Performers include The Billboard and March selections, with pieces such as Colosseum Overture and The Bells of St Marys, concluding with The Star Spangled Banner.
Polk County Draft Board issues first call since re activation. Twenty nine men are required to take a physical exam on August 17 with potential induction from this group. If most pass, oldest men may be called first. deferments are temporary and farm deferments are limited.
An exceptionally large crowd gathered Tuesday evening for a donkey ball game on the local diamond. The match ended in a 2 to 2 tie between married and single men, with playful antics by the riders sparking much merriment.
The WSCS met in church parlors on Thursday afternoon with program heads Mrs. Sund berg Mrs. Gustafson and Mrs. Stromberg in charge. Mrs. Gustafson led the worship service and a playlet titled Crusaders For Christ featured delegates in native costumes from Brazil Korea Malaya India and China. The visitors Mrs. Everett James of Palmer and Mrs. Arvid Carlson of Hordville joined local hosts Mesdames Skinner Stevens Nelson and Lindburg for refreshments illuminated by bright summer bouquets.
The 23rd Lind family reunion was held at Buckley Park on August 5 1950 with 82 attendees and 6 guests. Carl Lind of Lincoln presided in Rev Clarence Lind’s absence. Families from Galua Illinois Omaha Fremont Rexburg Venezuela and Washington DC gathered for a day of greetings, games, and a chicken dinner.
The Legion Auxiliary members and families will hold a picnic on Sunday, August 13 in Polk Park. If the weather is unfavorable, the event will move to the Legion Hall.
The Young People's Conference of Nebraska Evangelical Free Church runs August 14 to 20 at Polk Bible Camp. Rev Joy Cummings evangelist and Rev David Anderson Rev Will Norton speak. Bible Teacher Rev Trinity Seminary and Bible College. song leader Rev Herbert Kyrk and pianist Maurice Fangerstrom. Public invited to morning and evening services.
The Sundberg family held their 22nd annual picnic at Stromsburg on Sunday with over 100 attendees. Local relatives included Mr and Mrs Raymond Sundberg and several Sundberg family members from nearby areas and Vance Sundberg from Rockford Illinois.
The Children’s Society of the Methodist Church invites parents to cooperate with Mrs. Lloyd Stromberg and Mrs. James Lindburg to make Sunday sessions successful. Bring your children to Sunday School and have them stay for the meeting.
Mrs Emma Anderson arrives home in Polk after a 10 day visit with Miss Lillie Lind in Sioux Falls South Oak and Winnie Lind in Omaha.
The Strand reunion gathered at Capitol Beach in Lincoln with attendees from Polk including Mrs. Oscar Strand Hilding and Warren Mrs. Nellie Shoaf Mr and Mrs Paul Strand daughter Carlyn and Gloria Adelson.
The Royal Neighbors of Polk and Hordville announce a picnic supper to be held Sunday August 13 in Polk park.
A long tribute praises Polk city librarian Mrs. J. E. McDaniel for 37 years in Polk and 43 years in town. She manages 569 library books, works part time at the desk, teaches music, writes local news, and travels to Lincoln for book research and acquisitions.
Mrs A E Swanson hosted a neighborhood birthday party with nine members and two visitors plus a lunch. Pearl Jack was honored with fourteen friends delivering greetings and cake. A picnic at Fred Johnsons celebrated August birthdays of Don Ollie Gail and Demaris Johnson with family of Osceola and Wash DC guests. Fred Johnson remains bedfast after a fall. Stromsburg friends marked Myra Coxs birthday. Sam Wall of Hampton hosted guests including Brauer Wurtz Baack Troester and Leila Baack. A Polk park picnic honored Waldon McNaught with Nelson Kroger McNaught families and others. Sundberg and Arthur Bates hosted friends after band practice for Waldon McNaught.
Mr and Mrs Norman Wilshusen of Schuyler visited Sunday afternoon to collect their children Roger Joyce and James who had spent a week with their grandparents Mr and Mrs Otte Wilshusen.
