Polk County Fair Highlights Include Wrestling and Opry

The annual Polk County fair runs Thursday to Saturday with wrestling shows barbecue horses and a Grand Ole Opry performance as major draws. The week kicks off Wednesday with entry day and a full carnival, grand stand programs and additional features beyond these events.

Bridal shower honors Miss Twila Johnson at Polk hall

A bridal shower for Miss Twila Johnson was held at Polk Community Hall Sunday with 31 guests. Aqua and white decorations framed lunch served by Mrs Lloyd Van Housen and Mrs William Filter. Johnson to wed Calvin Bene in September.

Polk County Crops and Weather Brief

Surface moisture adequate subsoil short and crop conditions mostly good to excellent. Irrigated corn 95 percent heading or tasseling and irrigated sorghums 35 percent. dry corn 90 percent and dry sorghums 30 percent. Winter wheat and oats 100 percent harvested. Alfalfa second cut 98 percent. Pasture and range feed average with good grass growth in pastures and cattle condition good. Pink eye reported this week.

Lind Family Reunion Marked 38th in Stromsburg Park

The Lind families held their 38th reunion August 1 at Buckley Park in Stromsburg with 69 members and 3 guests. A noon chicken dinner was served by Pat Dahlin and others. A brief business session voted to keep reunions on the first Sunday in August for 1965.

Sunday school class picnic honors 48th anniversary guests

The Ambassador Sunday School Class of the Baptist Church enjoyed a picnic supper in the church parlors on July 28. Guests Mr and Mrs Elmer Hanquist celebrated 48 years of marriage with a short program and a photo display by M G Lindburg.

Osceola Publishing Company announces free 11x14 portraits to be taken Wednesday and Thursday August 11 and 12 from 12 30 p m onward. Recipients will be called or written about appointments and a few last minute subscriptions remain available for individual or family portrait photos.

Polk County Fair receives Ak-Sar-Ben grant for new building

Osceola's Polk County Fair will start construction of a new Agriculture and Art and Craft building with a $500 first payment from Ak-Sar-Ben for a three year grant. The program matches $500 from counties, with Ak-Sar-Ben providing annual funding of $50,000 plus premiums. The grant aid is part of Ak-Sar-Ben support to co fairs and improvements.

Bloodmobile comes to Shelby on August 16

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit Shelby High School auditorium Monday August 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call city chairwoman Mrs Dave Rutter at 747-2184 in Osceola to donate.
