Wendell Shaw reports complaints about boys shooting bb guns in the village. Sparrows and starlings may be shot, but all other birds are protected. Shoot so the bb leaves are accounted for and avoid buildings or people including the Progress editor.
Hospital reports list several patients admitted or cared for across multiple facilities. Will Garling and Milton Anderson are listed at Aurora Memorial and Central City hospitals, with Mrs. Reed, Mrs. Adelson, and Lillie Lind also noted at Osceola and Lincoln General facilities respectively.
Mary Budnick Light 83 of Osceola. funeral at Immanuel Lutheran near Polk with burial in church cemetery. Born September 21 1880 in Hamilton County. married John Light October 16 1902. Survived by daughter Mrs Donald Johnson Osceola son Erwin Light York nine grandchildren sixteen great grandchildren. Pallbearers were grandsons Dennis Louis Jerome Rodney David Jacobsen Bradley Johnson.
Pupils from kindergarten and first grade staged a circus in the high school auditorium with a ringmaster, music, tight rope acts, clowns, monkeys, dancers, cowboys, square dancers, a stage coach, and a grand finale. Directed by Mrs. Glen Brazda and Miss Joanne Barney with Mrs. Ruth Kroger assisting.
Polk and Osceola track squads scored just three points each at the Doane Invitational held last Friday. John Reckner placed fifth in the 440, the 880 yard relay finished fourth, and Mundt showed potential with a near qualifying time. The mile relay was near a school record but unscorable, as state meet quality competition limited scoring. Next meet is at Kearney this Saturday.
A music program directed by Mr Willadsen will be presented in the high school auditorium on Wednesday April 29 at 8 p.m. The program titled Songs of America will feature vocal numbers from grades two through eight and include a few instrumental solos.
Sunday night supper guests at Bill LaVelle’s home included Mr and Mrs Erwin Light and children Rodney Jerome Light and Ruby Tieken of York. Mr and Mrs Dennis Light and Gayle of Nebraska City. Mr and Mrs Louis Light and children from Maryneal Texas. Mrs Rudolph Gustafson hosted eighteen ladies for a birthday coffee party Monday afternoon with a carry in lunch at closing.
Letters were sent to households with children who will attend Polk Schools kindergarten next year. Parents missing the letter should contact the school office. Pre-registration is planned in the elementary school auditorium on Friday May 1 from 1 00 to 345 p.m.
The Fine Arts Festival at the Nebraska University Campus drew 1,564 students from 154 schools over two days. Participants included Joan Sandell with a prose reading Forgive Them Father and Eric Otte with Are We Running Out of Outdoors, plus Gail Giles Janice Creech and Delores Willits in music. Judges were professionals offering critiques and written reports to schools. Dramatics and music were sponsored by Mr. Sand and Mr. Willadsen.
Eleven members met at Mrs. Vergil Bush farm home for the Home Society meeting. Mrs. Anna Kisler was elected president, Mrs. Vergil Bush vice president, and Mrs. Ernie Lott secretary treasurer. Visitors Mrs. Leon Merkatz and Mrs. Morris Lindquist attended. Next meeting set for May 20 with Mrs. William Steel.
The notice lists events for Thursday April 16 with the Rebekahs, Monday April 27 with the Country Woman's Club and the Eastern Star, and involvement with the American Legion.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elwood Tewell, 71, will be held at the Metz Chapel in York today at 2:00 pm. She died Tuesday morning at York General Hospital. Burial will be at Waco.
The Polk County Teachers oppose an NSIA drive to elect the State Commissioner and politically appoint the Board of Education. They argue the current elected board and appointed commissioner system is democratic, has wide support, and should not be changed. They urge members to refuse to sign petitions to place the measure on the ballot.
Sunday's rainfall in Polk reached 1.18 inches with 1.17 inches already this month totaling 2.35. This compares to April 1963's 1.42 inches and leaves 1964 year-to-date precipitation at 5.12 inches.

The All Sports Banquet is set for Tuesday May 5 in Polk High School gym. Tickets at 175 each are sold by athletes. Guest speaker is Bob Gates associate basketball coach at the University of Nebraska who recently spoke at Ralston’s 1964 State Class B champions banquet. Awards, a King and Queen, and a meal by Trinity Lutheran and Arborville Congregational churches are planned.
The 50 voice Midland Lutheran College Choir will sing at Calvary Lutheran Church of Swede Home at 2 30 p m Sunday May 3. It is one of only three appearances in Nebraska Lutheran churches before a 21 day European tour through five nations. The choir was featured at the Nebraska Music Educator annual convention in Kearney last fall. Public is invited to attend.
