Fall Arrives in East Texas Amid Storms and Thanksgiving

In Livingston Texas last week a surprise storm reduced visibility and led to the cancellation of the Livingston Lions football game with Silsbee. Rainward days brought relief after a hot season, pumpkins and fall produce appeared, and community members shared memories from farmers to longtime residents. Joyce and I noted the origin of combines and the shift from mule plows to tractors, while paying tribute to local figures and youth workers. Prayer and gratitude linger as cooler weather settles over Polk County and the harvest season begins with harvests of pumpkins oranges apples and other crops.

Promoter Arthur Stilwell and 18th century governor in Texas

Two historical notes recount the death of Arthur Stilwell in New York City on September 26, 1928, and the tempestuous tenure of Carlos Benitos Franquis de Lugo as ad interim governor of Spanish Texas beginning September 26, 1736. Stilwell built railways to Port Arthur and beyond amid bankruptcy and controversy, while Franquis aroused opposition, jailed a predecessor, and fled to Mexico City after a lengthy trial.
