American Mother of the Year Returns To Utah

Lavina Fugal returns to Pleasant Grove Utah as the American Mother of the Year for 1955. A welcoming homecoming at Salt Lake City Airport and a 6 00 pm program at the Timpanogos Stake House featured Utah officials, church leaders, and local civic groups. The event was broadcast by KOVO and televised on KSL Channel 5, with ties to East appearances and praise for her representation of Utah and the Mothers of America.

Utah Guardsmen Begin Annual Camp at Jordan Narrows

Utah National Guardsmen 3200 strong will leave their civilian roles and begin their annual active duty encampment at Camp W. G. Williams in Jordan Narrows from June 5 to 19. Units will move from armories across the state by convoy with emphasis on modern armored artillery and engineer missions. Governor's Day on June 10 will feature a power demonstration and retreat parade reviewed by civic leaders and Guardsmen families.

Swimming Plans Announced by Recreation Heads

Recreation officials Ned Alger and Jeanette Shannon announce summer programs including a trip for children 7 and older to Lagoon or Saltair on Friday June 10 with buses from the old City Hall at 10:00 am. Bus fare is 2 cents plus any spending money. Saratoga swim dates will be set later. Girls dancing classes begin June 6 in the Old City Hall before moving to the High School gym.

School Education Meeting Held by District Committee

The Alpine District held the first meeting of its education committee at American Fork High School to study aims, purposes, and philosophy of the schools. Superintendent Alma P. Burton led the session, with 54 educators and laymen on the committee. Members from Pleasant Grove included Harvey Smith, Junie A West, Willis M Banks, Cavin Walker, Leslie B. Rees, Edwin J. Taylor, Vera Conder, Keith D. Miller, Eldon Jetnaon, and Karl Banks.

Queen Coronation Program Set For Wednesday Night

George Smith reports unusual interest in the Strawberry Queen contest with many nominees from Pleasant Grove. Votes close at midnight Monday June 6. the top six advance. Coronation program Wednesday at 7 30 pm in First Ward Amusement Hall with crowd voting for the Queen and attendants. Mayor Roberts and Kay Adams to crown. Admission 25 cents to cover costumes and floats.

Rodeo Queen Contest Slated at Pleasant Grove Grounds

The 1955 Rodeo Queen contest is set for Saturday June 4 at Pleasant Grove rodeo grounds. Eligible entrants must be 16 or older and not previously Strawberry Rodeo Queen. Judging follows Utah State Riding Association rules on personality and horsemanship. Substantial cash awards go to the Queen and five attendants. The public may attend free as Pleasant Grove Riding Club provides entertainment.

Junius A West Elected Vice President of Bankers Association

Junius A West cashier of the Bank of Pleasant Grove was elected vice president of the Independent Bankers Association of the 12th General Reserve District. The spring meeting in San Francisco also re elected Harry J Handing as president for a sixth term among 350 community banks across seven Western states Hawaii and Alaska. The group urged Congress to pass a bank holding company regulatory bill and tax equality for independent banks.

Timpanogas State house will host the Stake wide Junior Sunday School Music Festival at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 5. All stake Junior Sunday School children will participate, directed by Mary Varney, with no sacrament meetings that evening. Stake members are invited to attend.

May Weather Anomaly Records Set By Pleasant Grove

Weather observer Calvin Walker notes May had 17 days with rainfall but only 0.89 inch total, far below the 1.50 inch normal. The lowest May temp was 29 degrees on May 16, and the warmest day hit 83 on May 21. June starts with rainfall, including 0.60 inch on a recent storm, while a 40 degree low occurred Wednesday night.
