An advertisement in the New York Times claimed a “Tampa lynch mob” seeks black author Julius Lester for his book Revolutionary Notes, prompting Tampa police to find no local record of Lester’s visit. The sponsor said the phrase came from the author or ad firm and the ad was withdrawn.

Israelis Hit Iraqi Jordanian Artillery In Five Hour Raid

Israeli jet fighters bombed and strafed Iraqi and Jordanian artillery units for five hours along a 30 mile front north of the Dead Sea. Girl survives bear attack at Yellowstone. five year old in hospital

Five year old Daphne Jax, visiting Yellowstone, was mauled by a 400 pound aging grizzly. She was knocked down and bitten on the side as she fled toward a scrub pine. Park officials say the bear, harassed earlier by children, was killed by a ranger half an hour later. Daphne is recovering in a St. Paul hospital and slated for possible release next week.

SDS interorganization secretary Bernardine Dohrn announced the convention would not admit capitalist press. A large majority approved. An AP reporter was denied entry to the Coliseum. The event set a restrictive tone amid protest and controversy.

Mississippi oil slick barge righted but still leaking

An oil barge on the upper Mississippi was righted and partly sunk after a large leak of diesel fuel estimated at 64,000 gallons. The spill spread 15 miles downstream toward Minnesota, threatening wildlife and closing Alma beaches as officials installed a floating dam and prepared mop up operations.
